You might as well call this the Big Mele, Variant Version. Sunday's Cypress Hill SmokeOut festival out at Kualoa Ranch features mainland acts that have all, at one time or another, played concert promoter Goldenvoice's festivals over the past seven years.

SoCal Latino hip-hop potheads Cypress Hill headlined the '96 Mele, one done without the gruff services of Sen Dog (Senen Reyes), who left the threesome of Louis Freese and Lawrence Muggerud -- a.k.a. B-Real and DJ Muggs, respectively -- that February to work on his own punk/metal outfit. Sen Dog rejoined his esés in '98, and the group has continued to solidify its rap reputation with "Cypress Hill IV," a two-disc set that features metal side experiments "Skull & Bones" and "Live at the Fillmore."

Dec. 4 will mark the release of joint effort "Stoned Raiders," a CD that will feature both hip-hop and hard-rock tracks. Two singles from the album will be released nationally on Tuesday; rock stations will get "Trouble," while R&B/hip-hop radio will find "Lowrider" on its playlists.

While SmokeOuts on the mainland have mixed it up with more rap and dance/electronica acts, the Honolulu lineup will feature tried and true SoCal punk bands Pennywise (whose latest Epitaph CD "Land of the Free?" contains several songs that have taken on new meanings since Sept. 11), Suicidal Tendencies and the irreverent NOFX and Guttermouth.

Local hard-rock punkers the Knumbskulls and new island rhythm sensation Ryshé (the duet of Ryan "Rockwell" Asuega and Lorenzo "Fosheezie" Magalei), will be the opening acts.
