dreardon@starbulletin.comHe replaces Micah Kroeger, who was let go last spring after one tumultuous season.
Kroeger took over last season for Jim Winchester, who coached Kamehameha for 19 years, including the 1992 state championship team.
Kroeger was put on leave during the season because of complaints from parents about his coaching style.
He was reinstated after one game, but was let go after the season ended.
The Warriors went 8-6 in the ILH last season and did not make the state tournament.
Gabriel, 40, coached University High School to a state championship in 1988. After three years there, he was a volunteer assistant at the University of Hawaii for two years.
He then coached at St. Louis School for seven seasons, leading the Crusaders to two Interscholastic League of Honolulu titles.
Gabriel left Hawaii to work in sales in California in 1998 and returned last year.
Gabriel was a football and basketball all-stater at Punahou. He graduated in 1979 after leading the Buffanblu to a state basketball championship. He went on to start at point guard at Loyola Marymount for two seasons.
Other candidates included Warrior Division II coach Mark Lovelace and varsity assistant Jesse Nakanishi.
