Learn to improve health using spiritual sources

Two methods of promoting health by tapping into a spiritual source will be demonstrated at an Oct. 25 program on "Healing Ourselves, Healing Our World," sponsored by Health Ministries Association of Hawaii.

Jonathan Tani will demonstrate chi kung and tai chi chuan movement in a "Living Tai Chi" presentation. Lori Protzman, a Kaiser Permanente nurse, will teach "Healing Touch," which is provided by volunteer practitioners at the Kaiser Medical Center.

The program will be from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Oct. 25 at Church of the Crossroads. It is open to clergy, pastoral care and health ministries as well as the general public.

Join interfaith assembly in prayers for peace

An interfaith gathering to pray for peace will be held Oct. 21 in Diamond Head Crater.

The 4 p.m. program of prayers and songs will be sponsored by the World Conference on Religion and Peace, a movement of the Rissho Koseikai Buddhist organization.

The Rev. Yasuhiro Yano of Konko Mission of Wahiawa said members of Christian organizations and the Baha'i Faith will participate in the annual event. It is open to the public.

Bible Institute to raise funds with walk in park

The faculty of the Bible Institute of Hawaii is inviting supporters to come for a walk in the park Oct. 27 to raise funds for its year-round classes in island churches.

Participants in the seventh annual "Walk in the Word" will raise money by asking individuals and organizations to sponsor them in the 1.5-mile course at Magic Island and Ala Moana Park. Prizes, including a Disneyland trip, will be awarded to those who collect the most donations.

Pastors meet to find ways to answer people's needs

A group of Oahu Christian pastors will gather Tuesday to pray and plan efforts to build unity and respond to people's needs arising in the aftermath of Sept. 11.

The meeting, from noon to 3 p.m. Tuesday at Kalihi Union Church, 2214 N. King St., is open to pastors and their spouses from all denominations. The organizers call the initiative "For Such a Time." They intend to plan events that respond not only to people seeking spiritual guidance, but also to address practical problems such as the effects of increasing unemployment and economic recession.

Church of Scientology explains beliefs, practices

Members of the Church of Scientology will explain their beliefs and practices next Saturday as they host the monthly session of the Open Table Pilgrimage.

The educational program from 1:30 to 4 p.m. will be at Paki Hale, 3840 Paki Ave.

A religious service will be held at 2:15 p.m. It is open to the public.

Open Table, an ecumenical organization of representatives of several faiths, sponsors the monthly visits to various island churches and temples to promote understanding of Hawaii's religious diversity.

Central Union offers series on Mideast, Muslims

Central Union Church will present a seven-week series on "Who Is My Middle Eastern Neighbor?" beginning next weekend with a lecture on "Afghanistan and Its Neighbors."

A. Karim Khan, an assistant professor of Asian and world civilizations at Leeward Community College, will speak at 9:45 a.m. Oct. 21 at the Women's Building on the church campus at 1660 S. Beretania St.

Child care is available during the talks, which are open to the public. The series will continue on successive Sundays at the same time and location:

>> Oct. 28: "Middle East Policy and Peace" by Carolyn Stephenson, associate professor of political science, University of Hawaii-Manoa.

>> Nov. 4: "Islam, Part 1" by a Muslim Association of Hawaii representative.

>> Nov. 11: "Islam, Part II" by a Muslim Association of Hawaii representative.

>> Nov. 18: "A Muslim Woman's Voice" by a Muslim Association of Hawaii speaker.

>> Nov. 25: "A Taste of the Middle East" featuring a cultural exhibition of food, music and dress.

>> Dec. 9: "On Being a Palestinian Christian" by Ibrahim Aoude, chairman of the Ethnic Studies Department, University of Hawaii-Manoa.
