UH dispatches Tulsa to finish off
a perfect 10-day road swingStar-Bulletin staff
That was what the Hawaii volleyball team wanted and that's exactly what it got when it swept Tulsa 30-19, 30-9, 30-22 at Donald Reynolds Center. The Wahine (10-4, 3-0 Western Athletic Conference) survived a grueling 10-day road trip, winning three matches in four nights to extend their win streak to six.
Despite a few colds, Hawaii never wearied on the court and became more dominant with every match. The Wahine hit .505 to the Golden Hurricane's .143 and had only eight attacking errors while piling up 58 kills.
"We hit just tremendously," Hawaii coach Dave Shoji said. "Kim (Willoughby) had a phenomenal night again. Offensively we played pretty well. They couldn't stop us."
Willoughby hit .649 with a match-high 26 kills and only two errors. Maja Gustin, Willoughby's counterpart on the outside, turned in another solid performance with 12 kills, no errors and a .632 percentage.
Defensively, the Wahine outperformed the Hurricane (4-7, 1-4) in blocking 11-2 and digging 48-32.
Hawaii effortlessly took apart Tulsa in the first two games. The Wahine opened with a 13-2 run in the second game and never looked back.
With the match all but finished, Shoji mixed up the lineup in game three and used Jennifer Carey as a setter. Carey tallied 11 assists after posting three kills as a hitter in the second game.
The Wahine return to Honolulu today. They'll host Texas-El Paso and Southern Methodist this weekend. Friday's match against UTEP is at 7 p.m. and Sunday's game is at 4 p.m.
