Plate-lunch fund-raiser nets $15,400

Outback Steakhouses statewide raised a total of $15,400 selling $5 plate lunches. All proceeds raised Sept. 29 went directly to the Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund to help families affected by the Sept. 11 attacks.

Barry Cales, proprietor of Outback Steakhouse in the Piilani Village Shopping Center on Maui, said the establishment in Hawaii Kai raised the most money among the four restaurants.

"They raised a whopping $7,000," Cales said. "I heard it got so congested over there that police officers were called in to direct traffic."

At the Piilani Outback, motorists wrapped around the shopping center's parking lot, along with a line of people waiting for their Aussie-style plate lunches with grilled beef, chicken and two scoops of rice.

Other businesses, such as L&L Drive Inn, assisted Outback.

Lydee Ritchie, tenant manager at the shopping center, said, "I was further impressed when L&L Drive Inn donated a huge pot of rice when they heard that Outback's ran out."

Outback Steakhouse raised $3,700 in Kihei, $2,600 in Waipio Gentry and $2,100 in Kahana.

The establishment will also participate in the "Dine for America" program to be held Thursday. One hundred percent of their proceeds will go to the Relief Fund.

Outback Steakhouse in Kihei will continue its fund-raising efforts at Piilani Village Shopping Center's Aloha Festivals Hoolaulea on Oct. 14.

Benefit planned for slain Big Isle girl's family

A trust fund has been established and a benefit concert is planned for the family of Kauilani Tiarau Tadeo, the Big Island 6-year-old found murdered near her Puna home Sept. 27.

French Polynesian singer Marula will headline the "Celebration of Life" benefit concert Oct. 19 at the Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium, said family friend Pua Tokumoto. Other performers at the 6-10:30 p.m. event include Uncle Johnny Lum-Ho's Halau Ka Ua Kani Lehua, 2001 Miss Aloha Hula Tasha Oda, Hei Tiare Tahitian Dance Co., Bruddah Kuz and Na Leo Hookani.

Marula was Kauilani's idol, Tokumoto said. "She would sing her songs around the house and her dream was to one day meet the star." Hawaiian Airlines and the Naniloa Hotel are contributing to bring the singer over, she said.

Tadeo's body was found in a vacant house. The first-grader had last been seen playing in her yard. Her parents noticed she was missing about 4 p.m. and called police when she did not come home for dinner at 6 p.m.

An autopsy revealed the child died from a blow to the head with a blunt object, authorities said.

Contributions may be made at any First Hawaiian Bank branch or by mailing checks to Friends of Kauilani Tadeo, c/o PuaTahiti Productions, P.O. Box 10688, Hilo, HI 96720.

Tickets for the fund-raiser will be $15 for adults and $10 for children under 12. Tickets will be available in Hilo at Naniloa Hotel, Borders, The Most Irresistible Shop, MJS Music, and Basically Books or by sending a check to the above address.

For more information, contact Tokumoto at PuaTahiti@aol.com or 935-3002.
