The Surfriders and the Tigers
meet tomorrow night after
stinging losses last weekBy Jason Kaneshiro
jkaneshiro@starbulletin.comBoth teams are still smarting from tough losses last week. McKinley gave up two scores in the final two minutes of its 10-0 loss to Mililani last week, while Kailua was dealt its first loss of the season by nationally ranked Kahuku 48-7.
Kailua is 3-1 and tied with Castle for second place in the conference. McKinley is a game back at 2-2. And both squads are starving for redemption.
"We're 10 times better than how we played last week," Kailua coach Darren Johnson said. "We just want to put that game behind us and move forward."
The Kailua offense moved the ball against Kahuku, but mistakes and turnovers short-circuited several scoring opportunities. Surfriders quarterback Taleki Mailau was held to 25 yards passing and 10 rushing last week, but McKinley coach David Tanuvasa remains wary of the Surfriders' explosiveness on offense.
"They have a terrific offensive scheme," Tanuvasa said. "They keep it simple, but they execute it very well."
The Tigers counter with the running-back combo of Kimo Terry and Lorgan Pau. Terry, the speed back, averages almost seven yards per carry. Pau, the more powerful runner of the duo, has rushed for 298 yards and four touchdowns this season.
"What we have to do is prepare to stop both of them and if we can stay away from the big plays, we should be all right," Johnson said.
Tomorrow's action also features a key OIA White Conference battle as undefeated Roosevelt (4-0) travels to face Waipahu (4-1).
Roosevelt quarterback Chris Mols leads the OIA's top passing offense, throwing for 275 yards a game. The Rough Riders also lead the OIA White in total defense (144.5 yards a game) and scoring defense (33 points surrendered).
Waipahu running back Andrew Hale padded his lead atop the conference's rushing chart with a 118-yard performance last week against Kalaheo. The Marauders also boast the OIA's top rushing defense having given up just 97 yards in five games.
An Interscholastic League of Honolulu doubleheader at Aloha Stadium highlights Saturday's schedule.
Kamehameha faces Pac-Five in the first game at 4:45 p.m., which will be followed at 7:30 by the feature game between Iolani and St. Louis.
St. Louis is 1-0-1 in ILH Division I after last week's 24-24 tie with Kamehameha, while Iolani leads Division II with a 2-0 record after beating Pac-Five 37-21 a week ago.
Iolani has the momentum of a 4-0 start behind it, but the Raiders know their toughest challenge awaits them.
"We haven't been truly tested by a physically dominant team," said Iolani coach Wendell Look. "(The players) know this is going to be a true test of what kind of team they are."
For Iolani to score an upset, the Raiders must avoid giving up big plays to the Crusaders. Last week, quarterback Bobby George and receiver Jason Rivers connected on touchdown passes of 41 and 25 yards just before halftime to help rally the Crusaders after falling behind 17-0.
"They're a big-play team and they always have been," Look said. "George throws a really nice deep ball and he has some receivers to throw it to like Rivers and (Kainoa) Fernandez. ... Once they get it going and get the momentum, they're tough to stop."
Iolani quarterback Kila Ka'aihue atoned for two early interceptions against Pac-Five by passing for three touchdowns and running for another.
The game will also feature several of the league's top defensive players. Iolani defensive lineman Donny Mateaki and St. Louis' Tolifili Liufau are two of the state's fiercest pass rushers. Iolani's Blake Wong and St. Louis' Taualai Fonoti are playmakers as their teams' top linebackers.
This week's game also marks the first time St. Louis and Iolani have played in back-to-back weeks since the preseason. Both teams had byes between their final preseason game and ILH openers. They then had three-week breaks before finally returning to the field last week.
"You don't get into the flow and momentum of things when you have byes," said St. Louis coach Cal Lee. "Any coach will tell you they want to play games. That's how you get better, by playing games, not by practicing for three weeks."
