Lakers show spirit
in Hawaii scrimmage

Staff and wire reports

The Los Angeles Lakers held a spirited intrasquad scrimmage yesterday, even getting ticked at the officials.

Shaquille O'Neal, watching from the sidelines while he recovers from surgery on his left toe, and Kobe Bryant, attending his grandfather's funeral in Philadelphia, didn't participate. But that didn't stop the others from going full speed.

The Lakers were split into three teams and had three officials working. The players went eight-minute quarters in the Stan Sheriff Center on the University of Hawaii campus.

"We're trying to get them out there to play full court for eight minutes and have them play hard for that period of time," Lakers coach Phil Jackson said.

Robert Horry screamed at an official after he was called for a foul. Newly signed free-agent power forward Dickey Simpkins grew upset after a call, threw the basketball down hard and was called for a technical foul.

Guards Mike Penberthy and Joe Crispin, a free-agent pickup from Penn State trying to make the team, were particularly scrappy during the scrimmage.

Samaki Walker, playing the center position with O'Neal out, was physical in the middle.
