The Oahu Interscholastic Association has finally found a way to slow down Kahuku High School's football machine. Key to halting Red Raiders
is to hand them a bye weekStar-Bulletin staff
Give it the week off.
The Red Raiders have a bye after steamrolling through their first five OIA Red Conference games, beating their opponents by an average score of 45-10.
Kahuku's latest conquest came Friday night, a 48-7 thrashing of previously undefeated Kailua.
The Red Raiders racked up 404 yards in total offense while holding Kailua to 202. The Surfriders had averaged 425 yards in their first three games.
Kahuku running back Mulivai Pula accounted for 230 total yards and two touchdowns.
Now the Red Raiders have a week to recharge their batteries for the stretch run, which is bad news for Kahuku's remaining regular season opponents -- Leilehua, Campbell and Waianae.
In the Interscholastic League of Honolulu, Friday's tie between St. Louis and Kamehameha provided a stirring prelude to the league's intra-divisional round.
The Warriors and Crusaders slugged it out for 48 minutes, only to leave Aloha Stadium fans unsatisfied with the 24-24 result.
Kamehameha took a 17-0 lead in the ILH Division I contest, only to watch the Crusaders storm back to tie and eventually take the lead in the third quarter on a fumble recovery in the end zone. The Warriors capitalized on a mishandled punt to score the final tying touchdown, but neither team could muster another score.
After playing within their divisions for the first three weeks of the season, the ILH teams now enter the round-robin phase of the schedule. This week's slate features a matchup between undefeated Iolani (2-0) and St. Louis (1-0-1) Saturday at Aloha Stadium.
In the OIA White Conference, Roosevelt routed Nanakuli 30-6 on Friday to improve to 4-0 and tie Aiea for first place. The Rough Riders face Waipahu (3-1) Friday night in another key conference battle.
On the Big Island, Kealakehe and Waiakea remained unbeaten with shutout wins over Keaau and Pahoa, while Hawaii Prep scored a 35-6 upset of Hilo Saturday night.
Lahainaluna (4-0) captured the first round title in the Maui Interscholastic League with a 30-0 win over Maui on Saturday.
Waimea improved to 2-0 in the Kauai Interscholastic Federation with a 31-6 win over Kapaa Friday night.
