The Iolani girls cross country team finished first in its division at the Stanford University Invitational Saturday in Palo Alto, Calif. Shinkawa leads Iolani
girls to division winThe Raiders scored 64 points in the Division 4 varsity girls race at the Stanford Golf Course. Kristin Shinkawa was Iolani's top finisher, completing the 5,000-meter course in 10th place with a time of 20 minutes, nine seconds. Nicole Anderson finished four seconds behind Shinkawa to place 11th in the field of 143 runners.
Iolani's team score was also the 12th best among the 98 high school teams in the meet.
In the college competition, Stanford sophomore and former Punahou standout Victoria Chang finished seventh in the women's long course race with a time of 21:18 and helped lead the Cardinal to the team title. UH-Hilo finished 25th in the team standings.
The University of Hawaii's Cheryl Smith placed third out of 127 runners, followed by teammate Casey McGuire-Turcotte in 10th. The Wahine finished fourth out of 19 teams.
Garbin gives Ducks another game winner
Baldwin High School product Nicole Garbin scored the first goal for Oregon yesterday in a 5-0 victory over Eastern Washington at Eugene, Ore.It was Garbin's fourth game-winning goal of the season, an Oregon single-season record.
Chalise Baysa, who was born in Honolulu and lived on Kauai as a youngster, scored twice to become Oregon's all-time points (57) leader.
The Ducks (5-1-1) are off to their best start in history.
