Legislators who serve on the House Public Safety and Military Affairs and Transportation committees and the Senate Transportation, Military Affairs & Government Committee are expected to focus on policies and programs, operating procedures and interagency cooperation relating to public safety.
Pink palace: Washington Place will be decked out with pink lights this month to mark the second annual Global Landmarks Illumination Initiative as part Breast Cancer Awareness Month and Global Unity.

Long-term care: The Joint House and Senate Special Committee on Long Term Care holds its first meeting at 9 a.m. today.
The committee is charged with developing a financing plan partly designed to control the rising cost of long-term care.
Rep. Dennis Arakaki (D, Kalihi) is the chairman pro tem of the new committee. Other members include Reps. Michael Kahikina (D, Barbers Point-Waianae), Bob Nakasone (D, Kahului-Wailuku) and Mindy Jaffe (R, Diamond Head-Kapuhulu), and Sens. Jan Yagi Buen (D, Northwest Maui-Molokai-Lanai), Russell Kokubun (D, Kau-Kona), Colleen Hanabusa (D, Waianae-Makaha) and Bob Hogue (R, Enchanted Lake-Kaneohe).
Youth grant: The state Office of Youth Services has received a $707,000 grant from the federal Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention, U.S. Rep. Patsy Mink (D-Rural Oahu, Neighbor Islands) announced.
The grant was awarded under Title II of the Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention Act of 1974.
