Of all the gin joints and Web sites in this world, the last place one might expect to find a Bank of Hawaii banner ad is in the online edition of "DAWN," which calls itself "Pakistan's most widely circulated English language newspaper." Bankoh NOT advertising
in PakistanFound at www.dawn.com, it was apparent that the ad rotated with others, like the one for First Union National Bank of Delaware.
Such ads are often placed around the World Wide Web by companies called "consolidators."
In this case, the space is purchased through a company called Media Plex, according to Bank of Hawaii spokesman Stafford Kiguchi.
Through Hawaii-based Starr-Tech Interactive, Bankoh banner ads are placed via three companies called ValueClick, Advertising.com and ClickAgents.
"We're using this for our promotional campaign called Click, Call and Go," Kiguchi said, "which promotes Bankoh and Bank by Phone."
The way MediaPlex has the arrangement structured, Kiguchi said, "Only people who access the site from the 808 area code are shown the Bank of Hawaii ad."
"If you were there (in Pakistan), the Bank of Hawaii ad won't pop up."

McDonald's of Hawaii is among myriad businesses sporting donation canisters for victims of the Sept. 11 terrorist attack.On Tuesday the effort takes a different tack as the quick-service eatery hosts a day at the Blood Bank of Hawaii. McDonald's Oahu staff, managers and crew members will donate blood, while the restaurant chain will donate refreshments to all Blood Bank donors for the day.
The canister and drive-through donation box effort for the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund continues through Oct. 12.
