Waianae puts the clamps
down on Kaimuki

Star-Bulletin staff

The Waianae defense put on a strong display last night, blanking Kaimuki 17-0 in an Oahu Interscholastic Association Red Conference game.

The Seariders (3-2, 4-2) held the Bulldogs to 141 total yards, not allowing them to threaten until the second half.

Sautia Lave started the scoring on Waianae's first possession with a 2-yard plunge.

Waianae scored on a pass play to start the second quarter, but had it called back and settled for a 24-yard field goal by Kalani Hoopii, who contributed five points in the game.

After another three-and-out by Kaimuki, Waianae scored again when quarterback Caleb Paakaula hooked up with Teacel Hines for a 35-yard strike.

Paakaula was effective all night long, throwing for 191 yards and completing 13 of 20 attempts.

Travis Rodrigues rushed for 71 yards to help the Seariders gain 158 yards on the ground. Waianae totaled 349 total yards.

Kaimuki (1-2-1, 1-3-1) worked its way inside the Waianae 20-yard line in the third quarter, but fumbled away the scoring opportunity.

Kaimuki faces Campbell next week, while Waianae has the week off.

Prep Scoreboard

OIA WHITE

Pearl City 40, Waialua 0: Kiko Riego de Dios passed for a touchdown and rushed for another as the Chargers picked up their first White Conference win of the season and spoiled homecoming night for the Bulldogs.

Riego de Dios opened the scoring for Pearl City -- which had posted 24 points in its first three games -- with a 15-yard touchdown pass to Chris Domingo. Domingo added a 35-yard scoring run in the second quarter.

The Pearl City defense limited Waialua to 1 yard in net rushing and contributed to the scoring on Ricky Shinn's 30-yard interception return.

Pearl City faces Kalani next week, while Waialua travels to Kailua to meet Kalaheo.

MIL

Lahainaluna 30, Maui 0: A dominant defense held Maui running back Andrew Malafu to under 50 yards rushing and the Lunas clinched the first-round MIL championship at War Memorial Stadium last night.

Lahainaluna put the game away in the third quarter with a Kainoa Casco 13-yard touchdown run and Laulile score from 1 yard out. Casco set up Laulile's touchdown with a 59-yard run.

Friday's results
OIA RED

Campbell 34, Farrington 12: Prentiss Anderson scored two touchdowns as the Sabers won their homecoming game against the winless Governors.

Anderson opened the scoring in the first quarter on a 41-yard pass from Jonah Canionero. He also returned a kickoff 85 yards for a touchdown in the second quarter as the Sabers led 20-6 at halftime and controlled the rest of the game.

The Campbell defense intercepted Farrington quarterback Royce Machado five times, returning one for a touchdown.

The game was the first played at Campbell's campus field this season. The field wasn't ready for play for the Sabers' first two scheduled home games, which were moved to their opponents' fields.

OIA WHITE

Roosevelt 30, Nanakuli 6: Roosevelt returned to the field after a week off to punish the Golden Hawks on Friday night and tie idle Aiea for first place in the OIA White.

The game was decided by halftime as the Rough Riders took a 30-0 lead. The lone highlight for Nanakuli was a 61-yard touchdown catch and run by Marcus Simpson late in the fourth quarter.

In addition to stifling the Golden Hawks for over three quarters, Roosevelt's defense also recovered four fumbles. Nanakuli's Ikaika Asinsin, the OIA's leading scorer, was held out of the end zone and finished with 62 yards rushing.

Roosevelt (4-0) takes on Waipahu (4-1) next week, and Nanakuli (3-2) travels to undefeated Aiea (4-0).
