Alan Wong’s as No. 6
in nation

Gourmet magazine has named Alan Wong's Restaurant as No. 6 among the Top 50 restaurants in the country. Wong's is the only Hawaii restaurant to make the list in the October edition.

"Alan Wong is the master blaster of Hawaiian eats," the magazine says, "using the basic building blocks of native Hawaiian cooking ... to construct a devastatingly delicious alternative universe of his own."

The Top 10 consists of the most renowned restaurants in the nation. Placing just after Wong's is Charlie Trotter's acclaimed Chicago restaurant.

Another Wong win

Alan Wong has been named Wine and Spirits chef of the year by Santé, a magazine for restaurant professionals.

The award is one of four top national honors recognizing excellence in wine and spirits service, hospitality and cooking with and for wine and spirits.

Chefs, sommeliers and restaurateurs qualify for the Wine & Spirits Awards by describing their philosophiesand submitting their wine lists and menus for judging. Wong is the only Hawaii chef to be recognized this year.

Santé calls him "the Hawaiian maestro" and his King Street restaurant "a mecca for those seeking the ultimate culinary experience."

The Santé awards will be given out tomorrow in Napa Valley, Calif.

>> Wine and Spirits Restaurant of the Year: Patina, Los Angeles, Calif.

Moving on up

Marcia Cades has been named executive chef of Kaka'ako Kitchen in Ward Centre. Cades, who trained at the prestigious Culinary Institute of America in New York, has worked at Hilton and Sheraton hotels in Hawaii, as well as at Sunset Grill, Portlock restaurant and All-Star Café.
