Old ILH foes meet
for polo, volleyball

By Jason Kaneshiro
jkaneshiro@starbulletin.com

Punahou and Iolani renew their spirited rivalries on the court and in the pool Friday night.

The Raiders and Buffanblu boys and girls volleyball teams face off in key Interscholastic League of Honolulu matches at 5:30 and 7 p.m., respectively, at Punahou. The schools' boys water polo teams meet at 6:15 p.m. at the Iolani pool.

The girls volleyball teams enter their match with 5-0 records. The Buffanblu, the defending state champions, are ranked first in the latest Hawaii Sports Network girls volleyball poll. The Raiders are ranked second.

Punahou has rolled through its early season schedule led by senior outside hitter Michelle Look and sophomore middle blocker Puna Richardson.

The Raiders, who dispatched Kamehameha with relative ease in their last outing, have been led by junior setter/outside hitter Kanoe Kamanao and senior outside hitter Laakea Campbell.

The boys squads will be playing to keep pace with league-leading Kamehameha, which already has wins over both teams.

The boys water polo rivalry between the Buffanblu and Raiders is one of the fiercest in the state. Both teams are 2-0 entering their match. Punahou is the defending ILH champion.

OIA stadium arrangements stick: The seating arrangement for last week's Oahu Interscholastic Association football game at Aloha Stadium will be in place for at least one more game.

Fans were allowed to sit only on the mauka side of the stadium for last Friday's game between Kahuku and Castle. OIA football coordinator Richard Townsend said the policy will be enforced again next week when McKinley and Kailua meet at Aloha Stadium.

Kailua will be the home team for the game and their fans are to enter at gate 1. McKinley fans should enter at gate 7.

The OIA has two more regular season games scheduled at Aloha Stadium, an Oct. 25 game between Roosevelt and Aiea and an Oct. 27 game between Kahuku and Waianae.

Two quarterfinal OIA playoff games and the semifinals will also be played at Aloha Stadium.

Townsend said the policy will be reviewed after next week.

Townsend said there were a few instances of trash talking between the Kahuku and Castle supporters last week, but there were no major disturbances.
