Kwon wins distinguished
service award from PGA

The Aloha Section PGA bestowed the distinguished service award to former Honolulu Star-Bulletin editor and columnist Bill Kwon at the recently completed PGA Classic fundraising golf tournament at the Hawaii Prince golf course.

This award recognized Kwon for making significant contributions in reporting and promoting the game of golf. Kwon has reported on golf events and related human interest stories throughout the state for over 40 years.

He served on the Aloha Section PGA Hawaii Golf Hall of Fame selection committee since its inception in 1988 and continues to serve as the historical resource person for the committee.

Kwon sold his first Star-Bulletin on Pua Lane the morning Pearl Harbor was bombed. He was 6 years old. Kwon's first byline appeared in the newspaper in 1959, the year Hawaii became a state. He was promoted to sports editor and retired from the Star-Bulletin in the spring as a columnist/golf writer.

Maui Invitational brackets announced

College basketball's premier early season tournament has changed its name to the EA Sports Maui Invitational. What has not changed is the tournament's status as the place to see some great basketball games.

Defending national champion and preseason No. 1 Duke and consensus preseason player of the year Jason Williams will not have an easy road to the title.

If the Blue Devils can get by 2001 NIT team Seton Hall and new coach Louis Orr in the first round, they will face either South Carolina and new head coach Dave Odom, or the famed "giant killers" from Chaminade University in the second round.

The other side of the bracket boasts two storied programs with preseason Top 10 rankings in Kansas, which squares off with Ball State, and UCLA, which matches up with Houston.

UH soccer match canceled due to rough play

The Hawaii-Cal State Northridge women's soccer match scheduled for last night at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium was canceled when Matadors' head coach Allison Lee refused to play.

"Coach Lee expressed concerns for the safety of her players after a rough match (Saturday)," said Ryan Finney, CSN assistant athletic director for media relations.

Earlier yesterday, UH women's athletic director Marilyn Moniz-Kaho'hanohano and her counterpart at CSN, Grace Collins, agreed the match should be played.

A second match between the Wahine and the Matadors was arranged last week when Eastern Illinois pulled out of the Outrigger Hotels and Resorts Invitational.

But, the Matadors held a two-hour practice yesterday, then tried to secure new airline reservations to leave.

Northridge is not on the 2002 Wahine schedule. The Wahine leave tomorrow for a three-match road trip.

Hawaii Pacific keeps unbeaten streak alive

The No. 1 ranked Hawaii Pacific University volleyball team (11-0, 5-0) defeated Western New Mexico University (8-7, 2-1 PacWest) 30-25, 29-31, 26-30, 30-15, 15-12 in a Pacific West Conference match in Silver City, New Mexico last night.

Outside hitter Roberta Robert posted match-highs of 27 kills and 28 digs.

Hilo swept on the road: The Hawaii-Hilo volleyball team was swept 30-24, 30-23, 30-27 by Montana State-Billings at Billings, Mont., last night.

Tiffanie Ollison led the Vulcans in kills with 14 and digs with 21 but committed nine errors. Cheriesse Shiroma contributed 10 kills.

Hawaii's Own

Chris Truby, Astros: The Damien alumnus stayed in the dugout for his second straight game, a 9-3 win over the Cardinals. Truby is hitless in his last four chances dating back to Sept. 18.

Mike Fetters, Pirates: The Iolani graduate was passed up in the ninth inning for Rich Loiselle, who earned his first save of the year. It was Fetters' third straight game without an appearance.
