Moves by Malama,
Cox Radio Hawaii

Malama -- An Aveda Lifestyle Salon Spa will open at Halekulani in December, pushing the opening of the Kailua location from December to the first quarter of next year.

Malama at Halekulani will offer services exclusive to that location, and will be open to the public as well as hotel guests.

"Malama is a welcome addition," said Halekulani General Manager Fred Honda, "and we are delighted to have this new guest service."

Malama co-owner, Vice President and Wellness Director Mary Suiter said the menu of services and prices is still being developed, and that experienced Malama employees are being recruited for the new venture.

"Some staff members have really wanted to work in the high-end hotel environment," she said. Malama staff will also undergo Halekulani training protocols.

"We really want to be an extension of Halekulani," Suiter said.

Building out the former Halekulani Boutique space will be Canaan Construction, of which Max Suiter -- Mary's husband and Malama co-owner -- is president.

Events of Sept. 11 have nothing to do with the delay of the Kailua opening. "The biggest reason is size, really," Suiter said. With a child care facility, the "Organique" organic deli and a yoga studio, the Kailua location has three components which are new.

"And at 12,000 square feet we really want the stores to be absolutely perfect when we open the doors," she said.

Radio's revolving door

Former New Wave Broadcasting LP Director of Sales Mark Haworth served his first day as sales manager for Cox Radio Hawaii's KXME 104.3 FM yesterday.

Haworth's enlistment is part of a restructuring of Cox's local sales department which puts Director of Sales John Aeto over each station's own sales staff.

Meanwhile, the long-awaited consolidation of the geographically separated group is to begin next month. KCCN AM/FM (1420/100.3) and KINE FM (105.1), under General Manager Mike Kelly, occupy about half the seventh floor of Pioneer Plaza while KXME, KRTR FM/AM (96.3/1460) and KGMZ FM (107.9) are at Kailua's Pali Palms Plaza.

"We're going to move Mike's group to the new side Oct. 15, then do construction on Mike's side, and then my side will move down there right before Christmas," said Vice President and General Manager Austin Vali. The group's bookkeeping offices as well as a large conference room will be on the eighth floor.

"We should be moving full-steam ahead by the first of the year," he said.
