NYC tragedy

Restaurant Suntory at the Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center is donating all the proceeds on certain dinners to the American Red Cross to help with rescue operations related to the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

Benefit dinners include teppanyaki (choice of two from among steak, shrimp, scallops and chicken), washoko dinner (choice of sushi, teriyaki chicken or tempura), shabu shabu and sukiyaki. Cost is $19.95. Call 922-5511 and mention the special benefit dinner.

Early Oktoberfest parties

Kona Brewing Co.: If you overdo it on the food and drink, you can always polka off the extra pounds at a benefit for Hawaii Montessori Schools, from 4 to 8 p.m. Saturday. A dozen breweries from Kona, the mainland and Germany will be represented, along with several local restaurants. Entertainment includes German and bluegrass music, yodeling and costume contests. Tickets are $25 in advance, $30 at the door. Call 808-334-BREW.

Brewer's Dinner: A five-course meal will be paired with the house microbrews, from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Sam Choy's Breakfast, Lunch and Crab. Cost is $39.99. Call 545-7979. German lunch and dinner specials are offered Monday to Saturday.

Pearl premieres

The Pearl at Leeward Community College is back in business, now that the semester has begun. Chef instructor Rodman Machado is overseeing students in preparing a menu that will change weekly. Students also work the dining room.

This week's menu includes appetizers of Seafood Vol Au Vent and Roasted Prawn Salad for $3.95; entrées of grilled tenderloin, clam capellini and roasted chicken with orzo pilaf for $7.95 to $9.95; and dessert of chocolate soufflé and pineapple upside-down cake for $4.95.

The Pearl is open 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Call 455-0298.

Special events

Brews, Blues and BBQ: Samuel Adams beers will be paired with Southern specialties in a four-course meal, 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dixie Grill Aiea. The menu includes fried green tomatoes (with Pale Ale), chopped chicken salad (with Boston Lager Draft), barbecue platter (with Oktoberfest Draft) and deep-dish apple pie (with Hard Core Crisp Hard Cider). Cook like a chef: A cooking demonstration is followed by dinner, 6 p.m. Tuesday, 3660 on the Rise. Learn to make Chilled Tomato Bisque, Rock Shrimp & Watercress Tortellini, Beef Tenderloin with Grilled Portobello Mushroom and Foie Gras in Puff Pastry, and Macadamia Nut and Chocolate Chip Pie. Cost is $50. Call 737-1177.

Winez & Grindz: Chef Steven Ariel offers a seafood menu with wine pairings, 5 to 9 p.m. Friday, the Pineapple Room. The menu includes Hot Somen Soup with Scallops (served with Kubota sake), Chilled Seafood Salad (Alan Wong's Riesling 2000) and entree of Misoyaki Sea Bass (Gaston Huet Vouvray 1998). Cost is $49, $64 with wines. Call 945-8881.
