Bid for a firefighter,
help grieving families

Bachelor firefighters will be auctioned off for dinner dates Thursday and Oct. 4, 6 p.m., at Palomino's lounge. Money raised will go to families of New York firefighters lost at the World Trade Center. KQMQ's Lisa D is auctioneer. Winning bidders will get a $100 dining certificate from Palomino besides their firefighter. Donations will be accepted from those not wanting to bid. Palomino and Kincaid's are offering $10 dining certificates in exchange for a $5 donation to the Red Cross. It's a great, win-win opportunity ...

Star-Bulletin staff helps

Save Our Star-Bulletin donated $550 to help pay for the cost of a newsroom party last Saturday at Murphy's to mark the second anniversary of former Star-Bulletin owner Rupert Phillips' announcement to close the paper. In light of the recent terrorist attacks, the staff decided to donate that money to a relief fund. Staffers also started a matching fund and ended up raising nearly $1,400, which will also go to help victims ... The Tzu Chi Foundation of Hawaii has canceled tonight's Moon Festival. Refunds for script purchases will be taken until Friday. Call 737-8885 for info. If refunds are not requested, the money will go to Tzu Chi USA's relief fund for America's terrorist attack victims ...

Isle-born Ray Bickson, G.M. of The Mark Hotel in New York, sends word that his hotel donated blankets and towels to the various centers that were set up for rescue workers. The entire Mark staff donated $10 per person from paychecks this week to the American Red Cross World Trade Center Relief Fund, Ray said. The amount is being matched by the Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group, bringing the total to a bit more than $5,000. Hotel rates were slashed 50 percent for guests who were stranded in the city after the attack. Also, Ray said they have about 10 families -- who lived across the street from the WTC and cannot return home -- staying at a special WTC Emergency Discounted Rate at The Mark ...

Cynthia Child celebrates

Cynthia Child, whose true loves are golf and bridge, is ill and had to mark her birthday, Sept. 14, in Queen's Hospital. Ellie Dillingham and Maydelle Cione, two of Cynthia's bridge partners, came to help the birthday girl celebrate and so did Krista Dietz. Get well soon, Cynthia ... Ramsay was honored at a reception Tuesday at the art show put on by the city and the Honolulu Chapter of the American Pen Women at Honolulu Hale. Ramsay created her first piece of art in 1951 when she was 4 and, as part of the exhibit, she has her art from then up to the present on display -- 50 years of Ramsays. The exhibition runs through Oct. 5 ... K.C. Collins has joined Murata Creative advertising and marketing agency ...

Kona Carmack, studying cinematography at USC, has landed two national commercials, according to her mom, Billie Gabriel. She's appearing in a Ross Stores blurb in which she gives the shaka sign and also has a yet-to-be-released CompUSA spot with George Hamilton ... Former Arizona and UH head football coach Dick Tomey did a fine job as a rookie TV commentator on KFVE with pro Jim Leahey for the UH opener against Montana. He is the most knowledgeable football commen- tator for UH games that I can recall ...
