Waikiki Shell hosts musical NYC benefit

Members of the local entertainment community have joined together in staging "Aloha From Hawaii," a benefit concert tomorrow in which 100 percent of the profits will go to the "Widows and Children's Fund/World Trade Center," the official fund supported by the New York Professional Firefighters Association in the wake of the Sept. 11 tragedy.

On the bill are Ten Feet, Kanalo, Colón, Natural Vibes, Ka'ala Boys, DisGuyz, Mana'o Company, Kapena, Kalapana, Henry Kapono, B.E.T., Baby B, Amy Gilliom Hanaiali'i, Willie K, and many more artists, likely with more joining in as showtime approaches.

The concert will run from 2 to 10 p.m. at the Waikiki Shell. Gates will open at 12:30 p.m.

Tickets are $15 for lawn seating, $30 for upper terrace, $50 for lower terrace, and $100 for the pool/VIP section. Tickets are on sale at the Blaisdell box office and TicketPlus outlets.

The event is being produced by Mass Appeal Enterprises and is being sponsored by Unity House. For more information, call 526-4400.

Schedule changes

These are the immediate changes that have resulted due to last Tuesday's terrorist attacks in New York and Washington, D.C.

Date with Destiny

In light of last Tuesday's tragic events, all bets were off on whether this weekend's MTV Total Request Live concert featuring Destiny's Child at the Blaisdell Arena would happen.

Tour dates in Vancouver, Seattle, ortland, Sacramento and Calgary were postponed, and Sunday's show Honolulu show has been cancelled, but tonight's concert at the Blaisdell will go on as scheduled, at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $60.50 and $50.50.

The box office is giving refunds for the cancelled show. More information is available in the Today section.

Aloha Ho'olaule'a

The Waikiki Ho'olaule'a has been canceled, suffering the same fate as last weekend's Downtown Ho'olaule'a and the Aloha Festivals Parade. This is the first time in the festival's 54-year history, that began as Aloha Week, that a national tragedy has shut down the event, attended by nearly one million people on six islands over a two-month period.

Tower birthday changed

A ceremony that was to have marked Aloha Tower's 75th Birthday has been transformed into a fund-raiser, "A Gift of Aloha," for relief causes.

From 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. tomorrow, there will be patriotic performances by the Honolulu Boy Choir and hula halau. From 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., volunteers will be assembling a giant paper lei that will be sent to Washington, D.C. full of messages from those wishing to make a donation to victims of violence.

The first 500 to do so will receive red, white and blue Freedom Ribbons to wear.

For more information, call the Aloha Tower Marketplace at 566-2337.

Hello, 'Saynorara'

The postponed auditions for Army Community Theatre's Hawaii premiere of James A. Michener's "Sayonara," will take place at 1 p.m. tomorrow and Saturday at the Honolulu Theatre for Youth Rehearsal Hall, 2846 Ualena St.

The production will be staged in November. For more information, call 438-1980.

National Benefit Day

Signature Theatres has designated Sept. 25 as "Victims' Benefit Day at the Movies," with 100 percent of ticket and concession sales at its theaters donated to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund and the Sept. 11 Fund of the United Way.

Reggae Fest update

The Reggae Fest 2001 that was to have taken place last Friday will now go on Sept. 28.

Tickets for the original date of Sept. 14 will be accepted at the show, still at 8 p.m. at the World Cafe, and including the same bill of Half Pint, Tippa Irie, Phife, Jarobi and DJ Rasta Roots of A Tribe Called Quest, plus Humble Soul, THC and other special guests.

Tickets ae $18 for all ages. For more information, call 537-4666.

'Society' changing

The Society of Seven is amending its schedule to reflect the downturn in visitors to Hawaii, especially from Japan.

The Society of Seven Las Vegas will give one show nightly, at 8:30 p.m. Tuesdays to Sundays. Dinner seating for the Ali'i Buffet is at 7 p.m., cocktail seating is at 8 p.m.

For information and reservations, call 923-9028 or 923-SHOW (7469).

YES! show suspended

The YES! Encore Hawaii Show at the Ohana Reef Towers will suspend production after Sept. 23.

Citing the downturn in visitors to Hawaii for the show, which is popular with international visitors, Outrigger Entertainment President Fran Kirk said, "we regret to be an economic casualty of the tragic events that have happened on the mainland. There is no clear indication when the return of international travel to Hawaii will resume, so we cannot set a definite date on the resumption of the show. "

YES! will be staged 8:30 p.m. nightly through Sunday. There is dinner seating at 7 p.m., with the Plumeria Buffet offered, and cocktail seating at 8 p.m.

For information and reservations, call 923-9028 or 923-SHOW (7469).

"We thank everyone for their support," said Kirk.

Rainbow ahead

The "Remains of a Rainbow: Rare Plants and Animals of Hawai'i" exhibition scheduled to open Oct. 11 at the Honolulu Academy of Arts will open on Oct. 18 instead because of a delay in getting the artworks out of New York.

The exhibit is of 100 photographs by David Liittschwager and Susan Middleton, documenting the state's threatened flora and fauna.

For more information call 532-8700.
