UH-Nevada game on

The Hawaii at Nevada football game is on for Saturday after a conference call of Western Athletic Conference presidents this morning, UH president Evan Dobelle said.

"We will play the game," Dobelle told the Star-Bulletin.

Hawaii was to have played at Nevada last Saturday, but the terrorist attacks on the mainland changed sports schedules nationwide.

WAC commissioner Karl Benson determined that the best alternative for the league was to move the game to this Saturday. But San Jose State balked at the idea because Nevada was supposed to play at San Jose State on the same day.

Benson could not convince Spartans athletic director Chuck Bell to change his mind, so it came to today's conference call.

But it didn't even come to a vote, Dobelle said.

After about 10 minutes of discussion between Dobelle and San Jose State president Robert L. Caret, Caret made a motion that the board vote against the move, but the motion was not seconded.

UH athletic department officials were not available for immediate comment. They were busy making arrangements for the trip. Hawaii secured tentative air transportation last week in the event that the game would be on.
