UH reschedules The Hawaii at Nevada football game, originally to have been played tomorrow, has been rescheduled for Sept. 22, according to a news release from the Nevada athletic department.
game for Sept. 22
Hawaii will play the Nevada
game during its bye weekBy Dave Reardon
dreardon@starbulletin.comTwo keys to the move were Hawaii securing transportation to the game and the rescheduling of Nevada's Sept. 22 game at San Jose State. Both were accomplished today.
UH booked a charter flight to get the team and staff to Reno next week and the Nevada at San Jose State game has been moved to Nov. 10.
Tuesday's terrorist attacks shut down airports and forced massive changes in sports schedules across the country.
Hawaii athletic director Hugh Yoshida said this morning that UH had "no official confirmation" from the WAC of the change, but was moving forward with charter flight options.
"We do have transportation, but not ideal for our football team," he said. "(Coach) June (Jones) is working on trying to get something better."
The Warriors want to leave Hawaii late Wednesday or early Thursday.
"Our main concern is being able to get there in time," Jones said this morning.
Western Athletic Conference commissioner Karl Benson said he could change the WAC schedule. He just needed to hear from Yoshida that Hawaii could get to Reno next week. Yoshida said he contacted Benson this morning to tell him UH has transportation.
San Jose State is against the schedule change because it means the Spartans don't play their first home game until Oct. 13, and they have two consecutive byes.
Athletic director Chuck Bell reiterated his concerns this morning.
"We're even more resolved now, after I spoke with the university president yesterday," he told the Star-Bulletin. "It just wouldn't be acceptable."
Hawaii also wants to avoid going three weeks between games. If the Warriors could not play the Wolf Pack on Sept. 22, they would have played only once before their Aloha Stadium game against Rice on Sept. 29.
