Musashimaru wins, but Kaio
suffers second upset defeat

TOKYO (AP) - Hawaii-born yokozuna (grand champion) Musashimaru scored his second straight win, but ozeki (champion) Kaio suffered his second upset defeat Monday, on the second day of the 15-day Autumn Grand Sumo Tournament.

Wrestling before 10,000 spectators at the Ryogoku Kokugikan Sumo Arena, Musashimaru, or Fiamalu Penitani, charged No. 2 maegashira Takanowaka with fierce hand thrusts against his foe's throat and forced him out, handing Takanowaka his first defeat against one victory.

Kaio, seeking promotion to sumo's highest rank of yokozuna, suffered his second upset defeat, losing to No. 1 maegashira Asashoryu, or Mongolian Dolgorsvren Dagvadrj.

Asashoryu quickly put both hands inside of Kaio's belt and bulldozed out Kaio, who attempted to twist down Asashoryu at the ring's edge. Asashoryu is 1-1 and Kaio 0-2.

Kaio, who won the previous tournament with a record of 13-2, may be promoted to yokozuna if he wins the current tournament.

For an ozeki, winning two consecutive tournaments is one of the key requirements for promotion to yokozuna.

In other major bouts, ozeki Chiyotaikai pulled down winless komusubi (junior champion second class) Tamanoshima and remained undefeated at 2-0.

No. 1 maegashira Kotonowaka charged winless ozeki Miyabiyama with an arm throw attempt and sent him out for his first victory against one defeat.

Sekiwake (junior champion) Tochiazuma pushed out ozeki Musoyama, leaving both wrestlers at 1-1.

No. 2 maegashira Kotomitsuki fought off sekiwake Dejima's driving attempt by turning around the at the ring's edge and toppling him over for his second straight victory against no defeats. Dejima is 0-2.

No. 6 maegashira Kyokushuzan, or Mongolian Batbayar Davaa, threw down No. 4 maegashira Kaiho, leaving both wrestlers at 1-1.

No. 8 maegashira Kyokutenho, or Mongolian Tsevegnyam Nyamjav, drove out winless No. 10 maegashira Tochinohana for his second victory against no defeats.

In the 26-member juryo division, just below the senior makuuchi division, No. 2-ranked Sentoryu, or American Henry Armstrong Miller, suffered his second straight defeat against no victories, losing to No. 4-ranked Asanowaka (2-0).
