Devitt drills home
Wahine’s third win

The Hawaii women's soccer team almost waited until the overtime period to record their third victory of the season, but Arlene Devitt decided otherwise.

The sophomore striker from Kauai, scored an unassisted goal with two minutes, 26 seconds left in regulation to provide Hawaii with a 1-0 win yesterday in a nonconference encounter with the Gonzaga Bulldogs in Spokane, Wash.

Devitt drew Gonzaga (0-3-1) goalkeeper Brooke Longacre out of the goal, then drilled a shot with her left foot from the left corner of the box into the right side of the net at 87:34.

Hawaii goalkeeper Jennifer Churchill posted her first Division I shutout by saving seven Gonzaga shots on goal. The Bulldogs' best scoring chance came in the first half when Annie Hawkins' attempt was deflected out of bounds on a fingertip save by Churchill.

Overall, Hawaii coach Pinsoom Tenzing was pleased with the offensive opportunities created on the soggy field and said the goals will come. He is still concerned about defensive lapses.

"We're still giving away too many balls in the back. It's demoralizing and fatiguing when that happens. But, we have a solution in mind," Tenzing said.

The Wahine (3-0-0) outshot the Bulldogs, 16-14.

This is the best start for the Wahine since they won their first six matches to open the 1998 season. They conclude the road trip with a game at Eastern Washington today.

Wong, Arce become beach volleyball royalty

Kevin Wong and Lisa Arce were the big winners yesterday in Las Vegas on the sand at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino as the pair captured the $150,000 Paul Mitchell King and Queen of the Beach crowns.

Arce clinched the title by scoring a 21-17 and 21-16 win with Elaine Youngs over Holly McPeak and Sarah Straton in 42 minutes.

Wong became only the second player in Association of Volleyball Professionals (AVP) history to win the KOB crown in his first appearance.

Whitmarsh, the 2000 King of the Beach, finished second to earn $12,000 while Metzger tied for third and earned $11,000 over the three-days of the tournament.
