Wahine give Vandals the boot

For the second consecutive match, the Hawaii women's soccer team needed overtime to earn a win.

At Moscow, Idaho, Tiffany Makue broke a 1-1 tie with a goal at 105 minutes, the very end of the first sudden-victory overtime period, to provided the Wahine (2-0-0) with a 2-1 nonconference victory yesterday over the Idaho Vandals (1-2-1).

The junior midfielder was set up by a cross from sophomore midfielder Kalena Eaton that ended a parade of passes by the Wahine.

"It was a beautifully constructed goal with many touches," said Hawaii coach Pinsoom Tenzing. "Liz Lusk started the play with a pass to Joelle Sugai who passed to Makue, then back to Sugai, on to Arlene Devitt who took on a defender before giving the ball to Tiff. She hit it into the right corner."

The Wahine took a 1-0 lead when senior striker Jennifer Starsiak scored at 39:22. The assist went to sophomore striker Arlene Devitt.

"We need to be better organized in the back. We couldn't get our game started from the back today. That was our difficulty," said Tenzing. "I felt we controlled the ball more, but when Idaho counter attacked, I wasn't satisfied with our defense."

The Vandals, which outshot the Wahine 24-13, tied the score at 76:42 on a goal by Megan Cummings.

It was UH's first road victory since Oct. 25, 1999.

The Wahine play at Gonzaga tomorrow and at Eastern Washington Monday.

Semi-pro football meeting on Wednesday

A general football meeting for men and women interested in playing in a semi-pro league will be held Wednesday, 7:30 p.m., at the Pacheco Park baseball field in Pearl City.

The meeting is open to new and former players, and coaches from the Hawaiian Warriors, Hawaii All Stars, Leeward Chiefs, Kaneohe Hammerheads, Honolulu Hurricanes, Hawaii Hammerheads, Na Kane Koa, Koolau Monarchs, Windward Hawks, Kalihi Knights, Halawa Hurricanes, Ewa Beach Sharks, Waianae Fighting Hawaiians, Wahiawa Golden Eagles and Hawaiian Wave.

The meeting is to brief players and coaches on the new proposed eight-team Oahu Football League. There will also be a professional tryout running from Sept. 25 through Oct. 14. For more information, call John Frederick 671-8213.

Hawaii's Own

Mike Fetters, Pirates: The Iolani graduate did not pitch in Pittsburgh's 3-1 win over Cincinnati. Manager Lloyd McClendon passed over Fetters in a save situation, going instead with Omar Olivares.

The choice of Olivares to close was no accident. The Pirates need a closer, and McClendon thinks Olivares might be someone to consider.

"I wanted to see him in that situation," McClendon said. "We need to find some things out for next year and we're not going to leave any stone unturned."

Chris Truby, Astros: The Damien product did not play as Houston beat Milwaukee 5-3.
