Deputy sheriff sentenced
to 90 days

A deputy sheriff has been sentenced to 90 days in jail and two years probation for putting dog feces in his daughters' mouths after they repeatedly ignored numerous requests to clean up after their new puppy.

Charles Canady, 37, pleaded guilty as charged Tuesday to two counts of second-degree endangering the welfare of a minor. He also pleaded guilty to two counts of abuse of a family member for striking them with a belt on a separate occasion.

Canady agreed to plead to the charges to spare his children from having to testify at trial, said his attorney, Guy Matsunaga. "He's really a good parent who made a mistake."

Canady was ordered to attend domestic violence counseling and parenting classes.

His daughters, 10 and 12, are in the custody of Child Protective Services.

He apparently told his daughters he would put the poop in their mouths the next time the puppy made a mess on the bed and they didn't clean it up.

Canady realized he shouldn't have made the threat, but once it was made and the girls didn't clean up the puppy mess after a week despite assurances they would, he felt he had to follow through, Matsunaga said. The girls spit the feces out immediately, he said. Deputy Prosecutor Stephen Niwa disputed Canady's version, saying the girls had to hold the feces in their teeth and take it to the toilet.

Matsunaga said Canady was initially charged only with abuse for hitting them with a belt July 19, causing bruising.

When Child Protective Services stepped in, he told them about the feces incident, resulting in additional charges.

Since his arrest in late July, Canady, who was assigned to District Court, was placed on light duty and was stripped of his gun and badge, said Sidney Hayakawa, deputy director of law enforcement for the Department of Public Safety. He declined to comment on what will happen to Canady.
