Hawaii basketball coach Riley Wallace snuffed out rumors yesterday that Julian Sensley will join his team. Sensley is a former Kalaheo High School star and was among the nation's most highly recruited forwards of this year's freshman class.

"No, that's not going to happen," Wallace said.

Sensley, 6-9, had committed to the University of California last year. But he has not met academic entrance standards for the school.

Sensley played at Kalaheo before attending St. Thomas More prep school in Oakdale, Conn., the past two years.

Grand Prix tournament slated for Sept. 21-23

The sixth annual Mauna Kea Resort Grand Prix tennis tournament will be held Sept. 21-23 at the 13-court facility on the resort's grounds.

The three-day event draws nearly 200 players from Hawaii and the mainland, making the Grand Prix one of the largest USTA events in Hawaii. Play is divided into several skill levels, from novice to open player.

"It's the mix that makes the event so great," said Jay Paulson, the home pro who manages the Mauna Kea tennis facility and pro shop.

"Sometimes, the mainland players can be pretty competitive, while many of the local players are laid back. A little learning from both sides goes a long way," he said.

There is no admission charge for the tournament and spectators are welcome. For more information, contact Jay Paulson at Mauna Kea tennis shop at 882-5420.

50th Hinano Molokai Hoe race to be held Oct. 7

The 50th crossing of the 41-mile Moloaki to Oahu world championship men's outrigger canoe will be held Oct. 7 starting at 7:30 a.m.

The first finishers of the 100-plus teams entered are expected to finish five hours later.

The race begins at Hale O Lono Harboron Molokai and ends at Duke Kahanamoku Beach in front of the Hilton Hawaiian Village.

Crews from Australia, Japan, New Zealand, Tahiti, Canada and Hawaii are expected to compete.

Oahu's Lanika Canoe Club 1 won the race in a record 4 hours, 50 minutes, 31 seconds last year.
