The Kahuku Red Raiders shut out an undermanned Farrington team 47-0 in an Oahu Interscholastic Association Red Conference game last night at the Red Raiders field. Red Raiders cruise by Govs
By Jason Kaneshiro
jkaneshiro@starbulletin.comThe Red Raiders improved to 2-0 in the conference. Farrington fell to 0-2.
The Governors had more than 20 players sitting out the game due to academic probation and those who did suit up encountered a relentless Red Raider attack.
"When they get all their boys back they're going to be tough," said Kahuku coach Siuaki Livai.
The Kahuku offense racked up 388 yards in total offense against the Governors, but Livai was most pleased with the lack of penalties.
"Our biggest problem is going to be ourselves," he said. "We can kill ourselves with penalties ... so I'm really happy when I see less and less penalties."
Kahuku running back Mulivai Pula rushed for 85 yards on eight carries and a touchdown in one half of action. Quarterback Inoke Funaki completed 8 of 11 passes for 135 yards and a touchdown. Most of the Red Raiders' starters sat out the second half.
The Kahuku defense limited the Farrington offense to 116 yards and forced five turnovers.
The Red Raiders scored early and often in building a 47-0 halftime lead. Kahuku rushed for 184 yards in the first quarter, averaging more than 13 yards per carry. Of the six Red Raiders who carried the ball in the first half, five reached the end zone.
Moana Hafoka opened the scoring with a 34-yard touchdown run to end a five-play opening drive. Pula added another score at the 4:51 mark of the first quarter when he took a pitch from Funaki and dashed 28 yards for a score.
Two plays later, Farrington quarterback Gilbert Sa was sacked and fumbled. After a scramble Kahuku defensive end Darrell Tachibana recovered the ball in the end zone for the team's third score of the quarter.
Kahuku added the lead on Earvin Atuaia's 1-yard plunge on the opening play of the second quarter.
Loga Fonoimoana and Robert Tuifua also registered touchdowns runs. The Red Raiders closed the scoring with a 28-yard touchdown strike from Funaki to Fonoimoana.
The second half was played with the running clock due to the OIA's mercy rule.
Lahainaluna 17, Baldwin 7: The Lunas won their opener by shutting out the Bears offense, allowing only a late kickoff return for a touchdown.
Ikaika Neizman ran for a 1-yard score in the first quarter. The Lunas padded their lead in the fourth quarter when Laulile Latu bulled in from five yards out.
Baldwin had a pair of opportunities in the first quarter, but was thwarted by a blocked field goal and a failed conversion on fourth down. The Bears committed three turnovers in the final quarter.
Aiea 39, Kalani 0: Na Alii scored on its first four possessions. Lole Laolagi threw for four touchdowns and ran for another. Laolagi started the scoring with a 35-yard touchdown run then threw for scores of 29, 10 and 55 yards.
Aiea's defense got into the act after that, scoring a touchdown when Warren Tauanuu scooped up a Kealii Kekawa-induced fumble and ran 25 yards for a score.
McKinley 42, Leilehua 13: The Tigers rushed for four scores and Abel Werner threw for two more in a rout of the Mules at Roosevelt Field.
Werner got the Tigers offense going in the first quarter with a 2-yard touchdown run and later hit Lima Toa and Kimo Terry with scoring tosses. Werner was nearly perfect, connecting on 13 of 15 passes for 116 yards.
