Big bucks: At $422,000 a year, University of Hawaii President Evan Dobelle's salary puts him on par with chief executives of some of the top U.S. universities, according to the Chronicle of Higher Education.

Tourist killed in Maui bike accident

Paia, Maui >> A 50-year-old Michigan woman was killed yesterday when her touring bicycle collided with a U.S. government-owned van on Baldwin Avenue.

The 10:25 a.m. motor accident happened near Rainbow Park between Makawao and Paia, said police Sgt. Anthony Poplardo. Kathleen Dartos of Harrison, Mich., crossed the center line on her bicycle and hit a 1997 Ford Econoline van head-on, he said.

The 45-year-old man driving the van was not injured, Poplardo said.

Dartos, who was on a Maui Downhill Bicycle Tour, was pronounced dead at Maui Memorial Medical Center at 11:28 a.m.

Pickup truck collides with 18-wheeler on Kauai

KEKAHA, Kauai >> A 52-year-old man was critically injured when his Chevrolet pickup collided with an 18-wheel gasoline tanker on Kaumualii Highway at 7:55 a.m. yesterday.

The westbound pickup crossed the center line and collided with the eastbound tanker. The 36-year-old driver of the tanker was not injured, according Kauai police. The injured man was taken to Kauai Veterans Memorial Hospital in critical condition, then transferred by air to Queen's Medical Center where he was listed in guarded condition.

The cause of the wreck is under investigation. Neither speed nor alcohol appear to be factors.

Hilo police arrest man for attempted murder

HILO >> Hilo police arrested a 39-year-old man for attempted murder Friday night after several fights reportedly occurred at the Wailoa State Park.

A 19-year-old Hilo man was apparently stabbed in the back, police said. The man was taken to the Hilo Medical Center in critical condition.

Police said several fights were taking place at the time the man was stabbed.

The suspect is being held at the Hilo police cellblock.

Pahoa man flips car, hospitalized at Queen's

KOHALA, Hawaii >> A Pahoa man, injured when his car overturned in a one-car crash Friday in South Kohala, remained in critical condition at Queen's Medical Center yesterday.

Police said the 53-year-old man was driving a four-door sedan makai on Waikoloa Road near the 10-mile marker when the accident occurred at 11:15 a.m. While attempting to pass another vehicle, he lost control of the car and overturned, coming to rest against a tree.

The man was taken to North Hawaii Community Hospital in critical condition and was later flown to Queen's Medical Center.

Woman falls off hood after boyfriend drives off

A 41-year-old homeless man was arrested for second-degree assault after he drove his car off with his girlfriend clinging to the hood Friday, police said.

Police say the couple had argued because the man refused to return the woman's belongings.

The 35-year-old woman from downtown suffered minor abrasions after the man drove a short distance and stopped abruptly, causing her to fall off. The two continued to argue, and she clung to the driver's door. The man again drove off, and the woman let go and fell to the ground. The woman refused treatment.

Motorcyclist crashes on Kamehameha Highway

A 20-year-old Navy man stationed at Pearl Harbor is in critical condition after he fell off his speeding motorcycle, police said.

The motorcycle was traveling south on Kamehameha Highway on Friday at 10:10 p.m., ran off the roadway and struck a guardrail, police said. The driver was thrown off the motorcycle, hit the ground, bounced off the guardrail and was thrown back onto the road.

The man was not hit by any oncoming cars, but suffered injuries to his right arm, head and upper torso injuries, and abrasions all over his body. Police say they believe the rider was not wearing a helmet.
