Arlene Devitt scored at 9:31 of the first sudden-victory overtime period to lift the University of Hawaii women's soccer team to a 2-1 victory last night over Sacramento State at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium.

The play began when Kalena Eaton picked up a loose ball in the middle of the field and pushed a pass to Liz Lusk moving up on the right flank. Lusk passed forward to Devitt who had a step on her defender. The sophomore striker took a step, then beat the Hornets' goalkeeper with a low, angle shot 12 yards out that sent 476 umbrella-toting fans home happy.

It was the season-opening match for both teams.

The Wahine opened the game with decent offensive pressure, forcing two early corner kicks. The second one came after a long run down the left side by Jennifer Starsiak. She took the corner, floating the ball into the middle, six yards off the line.

A scramble ensued and the ball squirted off to the right side where Pam Fong was waiting. She calmly first-timed a ground shot that angled back into the left corner of the net nine minutes, 59 seconds into the half.

As often happens after a team is scored upon, the Hornets mounted some pressure of their own and created two solid opportunities, but both missed. Summer Douglas' attempt on an open goal from 14 yards out was high. Moments later, Mililani High School graduate Dana Dydasco was wide right on an off-balance shot from eight yards out.

The Hornets tied the score at 80:19 when Naomi Ennis won a battle for the ball in the right corner from UH defender Krystalynn Ontai, crossed low to Lisa Wrightman who was standing just off the line by the near post.

The junior striker merely redirected the ball into the net.

Up to that point, Hawaii had outshot Sacramento State 9-2 in the second half.

UH goalkeeper Jennifer Churchill saved the game in regulation when Wrightman broke through the Wahine defense only to be stuffed by a diving Churchill near the penalty kick spot with 89:55 on the clock.

Wrightman broke through again at 7:57 of the first overtime and again Churchill dove and stuffed the shot."It was OK for the the first go-around, but we need to improve," UH coach Pinsoom Tenzing said.
