New Lani Moo mooves
in to Children’s Zoo

A NEW Dairy Queen at the Zoo? Well, sort of. The newest Lani Moo, or Lani Moo Two, if you prefer, has taken up residence in the Children's Zoo this week, thanks to Meadow Gold honcho Glenn Muranaka, known affectionately as the "Big Cowhuna." This udderly beautiful bovine will join the miniature horse, pygmy goats, llamas and pot-bellied pigs in the kids' section of Honolulu Zoo. The new Lani Moo, replacing the cud-ly Moo-cher who's being retired after six years to Waimanalo Farm, was picked by Meadow Gold vet Ray Martin. And -- cowabunga -- Muranaka even recommissioned artist Peggy Chun to restore Lani Moo's mural inside her pen. At a party to welcome the new Lani Moo, guests grazed on special treats including animal crackers from Diamond Bakery, washed down -- surprise! -- by milk. This may be only the second Lani Moo to live at the Zoo, but the mascot has been part of Meadow Gold since the days when it was Dairyman's in 1949 ...

DINING at Nick's Fishmarket and looking for all the world like a guy who'd order milk in such a place was Pat Sajak. He was taking off some time from "Wheel of Fortune" to dine with old pal Joe Moore and get in some rehearsal time for "The Odd Couple," which will be presented for four nights at the Hawaii Theatre as a fund-raiser for Manoa Valley Theatre. Director Jim Hutchison has the unenviable task of rehearsing, taking time off, rehearsing some more, and keeping things rolling when Sajak has to be back with the Wheels in Hollywood ... Hawaii Youth Symphony conductor Henry Miyamura will be presented the Alfred Preis Award by the Hawaii Alliance for Arts Education in ceremonies Sept. 22 at the Hawaii Theatre. The Brothers Cazimero will perform ...

In his LMNT

Wondering what's happening to Ikaika Kahoano since he said "No" to O-Town? Some e-mailers are. Dad Kimo Kahoano proudly informs one and all he's formed a band called LMNT (pronounced "element"), which has signed with Atlantic Records and will be releasing its premiere CD in January ...

CABLE TV game-show host J.D. Roth, whose current show, "SexWars" has young men and woman fighting about the opposite sex, was on Maui hosting a "game show" event at Queen Ka'ahumanu Center. No sexy format for this one, however. It was aimed at kids. Old Wailuku Inn proprietress Janet Fairbanks and granddaughter Taylor were in a typical event. Taylor had to dive head first into a plate of chocolate pudding and syrup, pick up four gummi worms and then put them into a beak-shaped cup attached to Fairbanks' mouth. The grand prize for the moms and tutus participating was, of course, a big chocolatey kiss ...

Garveys win 7-6

BIG Isle residents Dick Boyd and Dr. Cheri Garvey both have daughters named Malia, but it wasn't until they were chatting recently that they realized the mother of Malia Boyd was Mia Hemmings, and that Dr. Garvey and Mia matriculated at Punahou at the same time. Cheri said that the Garvey family (with seven members) was the biggest at Punahou, and the Hemmings' clan, with six, was the next biggest. In any case, Punahou benefited greatly from the two families ...
