volleyball poll

Star-Bulletin staff

The Hawaii Pacific volleyball team moved up two spots to No. 2 in the AVCA Division II coaches poll released yesterday, following a season-opening, four-game win against St. Martin's (Wash.) College on Monday night.

North Alabama, which has yet to play a match this year, took over the top spot after West Texas A&M dropped from No. 1 to No. 3 following a loss to No. 6 Western State.

The Lady Sea Warriors were far from dominant in their victory over St. Martin's, yet still ran their winning streak to 29 games. HPU has been ranked among the top four teams in Division II in 32 consecutive polls, dating back to Nov. 3, 1998.

HPU has now won 43 of its last 44 matches and is 59-3 since the start of the 1998 Division II national tournament.

Seasiders-Saints matchup canceled

The Brigham Young-Hawaii vs. Saint Martin's (Wash.) volleyball match was canceled due to last night's power outage on the North Shore.

The score was tied 13-13 in the first game when the lights went out.

The match won't be rescheduled because both teams are headed to the Big Island today to play in the Hawaiian Style Classic at Hawaii-Hilo.

NFL islander

Tevita Ofahengaue, also known as "Mr. Irrelevant" as the last pick in April's NFL Draft, is still with the Arizona Cardinals, as teams trimmed their rosters to 65 yesterday.

The 6-foot-2, 253-pound tight end, a Kahuku and Brigham Young alumnus, is third on the Cardinals' depth chart.

Arizona released two tight ends on Monday -- Terrence McCaskey, who had been a fourth-stringer, and Elliott Carson.

Ofahengaue is still behind starter Hardy Terry and back-up Mitchell Tywan.

Hawaii's Own

Benny Agbayani, Mets: The St. Louis and Hawaii Pacific alumnus did not play in New York's 9-6 loss to Philadelphia.

Mike Fetters, Pirates: The Iolani graduate picked up his sixth save -- barely -- in Pittsburgh's 6-5 win over Milwaukee. With one out, Fetters gave up a run-scoring double but then got Jeromy Bernitz to ground out. After intentionally walking Richie Sexson, Fetters ended the game by striking out pinch- hitter Angel Echevarria.

Chris Truby, Astros: The Damien alum did not play in Houston's 6-4 win over Cincinnati.
