resume Sept. 14 in Indiana

The ex-Marine charged with killing a 13-year-old girl 26 years ago remains in custody in an Indianapolis jail after his extradition hearing yesterday was continued until Sept. 14.

Delmar Edmonds, 46, is charged with the shooting death of Dawn Bustamante, who was abducted, raped and shot in the head, in Kailua on March 14, 1975.

A friend who was abducted with Bustamante that night escaped. Edmonds is charged with one count of murder and one count of attempted murder.

Police questioned Edmonds twice in 1975 but the surviving victim could not positively identify him.

The investigation was renewed on Feb. 5, 2000. A few months later a Marine who had been assigned to the same company as Edmonds in Kaneohe sent an unsolicited e-mail to CrimeStoppers.

Michael Ryback told police that Edmonds had asked him and other Marines to lie about his whereabouts at the time of the murder and that Edmonds had a handgun similar to the one described by the surviving victim. Two other former Marines corroborated Ryback's statement, police said.

Another Kaneohe Marine told investigators Edmonds had told him that he had killed a female on the night of the killing.

Honolulu police detectives and a Naval Criminal Investigative Service investigator traveled to Indianapolis to arrest Edmonds last month. The extradition hearing is being handled by Marion County attorneys.

Edmonds remains in the Marion County Jail in lieu of $500,000 bond.
