HECO reports disruption to power across Oahu
Hawaiian Electric Company officials said there were 3 major power outages on Oahu within a 24-hour period this week. The outages occurred between 10 p.m. Monday and 7:45 last night and affected an estimated 8,800 customers.
At 7:45 last night an outaged affected 6,000 customers from Waialua to Kahuku.
HECO crews restored power to the area within an hour but as of last night were unsure what caused the outage.
Another outage at 10:03 Monday night affected 1,900 customers in the Salt Lake, Foster Village and Aliamanu area.
HECO restored power in 58 minutes and traced the problem back to a substation malfunction, spokesman Fred Kobashikawa said.
The other outage yesterday near Kualoa Ranch occurred when a vehicle struck a utility pole along Kamehameha Highway at 1:20 p.m.
That outage affected 900 customers. Power to all but five customers was not restored until 5:44 p.m. because repair crews got caught in the traffic created by the accident, Kobashikawa said.
The crash left the pole leaning across the highway and police closed both lanes of Kamehameha Highway fronting Kualoa Ranch.
Police routeed both directions of traffic through Kualoa Ranch.
They opened one lane of the highway at 6:00 p.m. and the second one at 10 p.m. when Hawaiian Electric Company workers completed repairs to the utility pole.
The driver of the car, a 60-year-old Ewa Beach man, told police he fell asleep behind the wheel.
He suffered minor injuries and was taken to Castle Medical Center in stable condition.
