A hidden agenda
The upcoming "Hawaii's 5-0" design competition and award program is a way to recognize excellence in graphic design printed in Hawaii. Fine.Creators of 50 of the best printed materials produced in the islands will be honored, with special recognition to the top five. Great.
However, the American Institute of Graphic Arts Honolulu Chapter and Printed In Hawaii Association have an ulterior motive. Money.
A lot of it has been leaving the state.
An industry study in the mid-1990s found that an estimated $200 million in potential print job revenue is sent out of the islands annually.
"This competition and award show is designed to promote local print organizations and design organizations," said Stacey Leong Mills, Honolulu AIGA President and graphic artist for Team Vision LLC.
"We want to showcase the quality and potential of our local services to keep local design and printing jobs in Hawaii."
