This very complete guidebook to appropriate clothing to wear while visiting the 49th state fills a niche in this missing knowledge. Contains month-by-month charts of average weather and precipitation: Note how often it falls below freezing!

"Surfing Huge Waves With Ease"
by Fred Van Dyke (Anoai Press, $12.95)

This classic guide -- with one of the great book titles of all time -- has been brought back into print by local publisher Anoai and should please surfing buffs of all ages. The original dates back to 1992, at least. It's more of an essay on surfing philosophy than a how-to hands-on, which is why it's still relevant. Van Dyke's text is amusingly unprententious, and nearly devoid of surf lingo, which is a righteous thing, dude.
