MAUI RESTAURANTS are the wine-list champions of the state, so named in Wine Spectator magazine's annual restaurant awards, published in the September issue.

Out of 26 Hawaii restaurants recognized for the quality of their wine lists, 18 are on Maui. Just six are on Oahu and two on the Big Island. The restaurants were given Awards of Excellence, with two on Maui earning the higher grade of Best of Award of Excellence.

The magazine states that the Award of Excellence recognizes a wine selection of better producers that matches the menu in both price and style. Most have at least 80 selections. The Best of ... award goes to those that display "vintage depth," including vertical offerings of top wines, as well as good representation from the major wine-growing regions. These restaurants generally provide 500 or more offerings.

The ultimate award, the Grand Award, recognizes wine lists of "uncompromising, passionate devotion to quality." Most winners at this level have 1,250 or more selections. New winners in this category this year are Gary Danko and the Fifth Floor, both in San Francisco; The Federalist, Boston; and Marinus, Carmel Valley, Calif.

Restaurants submit their wine lists for judging by the magazine. More than 2,700 restaurants are recognized nationwide. The full list is available on the Web site, www.winespectator.com, and may be searched by location.

Dixie doings

"Brews, Blues and BBQ" features Southern specialties paired with beer, 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at Dixie Grill on Ward Avenue.

The menu: Fried green tomatoes, chopped chicken salad and a platter of ribs, catfish and hushpuppies. Each course is paired with a Samuel Adams beer. Cost is $30.

The Southern theme continues with a menu of special appetizers and entrées offered through Halloween

Also at Dixie Grill, secretaries get a 50 percent discount on sandwiches, salads and entrées every Tuesday. Just bring a business card.
