jkaneshiro@starbulletin.comIn a game of starts and stops, the teams combined for 12 fumbles in the contest. At one point, the Sabers and Surfriders ball carriers put the ball on the grass on four consecutive plays.
Campbell fumbled nine times and lost six, while Kailua dropped the ball three times and lost it twice.
Two of Campbell's turnovers led directly to touchdowns for the Kailua defense.
After a second quarter goal-line stand gave the Sabers the ball at their own 1-yard line, running back Shauncey Saito fumbled and the ball was scooped up by Kailua defensive back Ranson Kepa, who returned it 2 yards for a touchdown to open the scoring.
Koa Sniffen recovered the ball in the end zone for a fourth quarter score when Saito couldn't handle a high snap from center on an attempted punt.
When they could hang on to the ball, both offenses moved it effectively on the ground. Nathan Leaver paced the Kailua offense with 184 yards and scored on an 86-yard dash in the fourth quarter.
Senior quarterback Taleki Mailau added 67 rushing yards and iced the game with a 1-yard plunge late in the game.
Saito rushed for 131 yards for Campbell, including a 50-yard scoring run in the second quarter.
Anthony Dutro picked up 116 yards, all in the second half, and scored on a 63-yard dash.
