Choral group featured at Liliuokalani tribute
The vocal ensemble Kawaiolaonapukanileo and organist Ed Kurtz will be featured in a musical tribute to Hawaii's last monarch next weekend.The annual Queen Liliuokalani Organ Concert will be at 4 p.m. Sept. 2 at Kawaiahao Church. It is free and open to the public. The choral group, which includes professional Hawaiian vocalists and is directed by Nola Nahulu, will perform songs composed by the queen, with narration by Puanani Higgins.
Kawaiahao choir soloist Malia Ka'ai will sing.
Kurtz, former choirmaster and organist at St. Peter's Episcopal Church, will perform works by Buxtehude, Walton, Shearing and Vaughn Williams.The concert is sponsored by the Kawaiahao Church ministry of music and performing arts.
Korean Methodists to hold annual meet in isles
A national organization for Korean-American Methodists will hold its annual convention here Sept. 13-15.
The Rev. Peter Cha, a teacher at Garrett Evangelical Theological Seminary in Chicago and a doctoral candidate at Northwestern University, will be keynote speaker at the convocation of TG, a "transgenerational" group serving English-language Korean ministries and congregations.
Registration will begin at 2 p.m. Sept. 13 at Christ United Methodist Church, 1639 Keeaumoku St. A 6 p.m. dinner and 7 p.m. opening session of praise and worship will follow.

Kaimuki church seeks Penny Sale contributions
If there's a closet shelf or drawer in your house cluttered with unused gifts or purchases -- jewelry that just isn't you, housewares that were redundant, towels that didn't match the color scheme -- here's a chance to recycle and do a good deed at the same time.Pat Kaslausky, outreach coordinator with St. Patrick Church in Kaimuki, is seeking contributions for the annual Penny Sale, which gives low-income children a way to select Christmas gifts for the important adults in their lives.
About 1,000 children from 2 to 12 years old are expected to participate in the sale, which is sponsored by Palolo organizations including the church's food pantry/outreach program. Youngsters will pay 1 cent for each gift bought at the unique boutique Dec. 1 at Jarrett Intermediate School.
Suggested merchandise includes:
>> Household items such as blankets, bedding, sets of dishes or glasses, cookware, flatware.
>> Personal items such as perfume, bath soap and powder, shaving kits and toiletry sets.
>> Specialty items including jewelry, watches, purses and wallets, fishing supplies, tools and toolboxes.
Donations should be new or in excellent condition and may be dropped off at the St. James Outreach Center, 2117 Palolo Ave., or at the St. Patrick Church office, 1124 7th Ave. Monetary contributions to purchase merchandise are tax-deductible.
