Individuals planning to travel abroad now can obtain their passports through Kapiolani Community College or the University of Hawaii at Manoa.

Joining some U.S. post offices in Hawaii and some state libraries, the two campuses have staff who can review the applications and documents and forward them to the U.S. Passport Agency.

KCC instructor Merrily Burns said that to obtain a passport, individuals need to bring a completed application form, proof of U.S. citizenship, two passport photos and a photo ID.

Anyone without passport photos can have them taken at the schools for a fee of $10.

The passports are available to the general public on weekdays throughout the school year at either campus -- at KCC's Olapa Room 112 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., or at the UH Campus Center from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The cost is $45 along with a $15 application fee.

Cash, personal checks or money orders are accepted.

Burns said individuals normally receive the passport in the mail within 27 days.
