"The Deep End" -- A hit at the recent Sundance Film Festival, it's about a suburban mom's attempts to cover up her son's involvement in the murder of his male lover and dealing with a sleazy blackmailer (R).
Friday
"Bubble Boy" -- An immunodeficient guy chases the girl of his dreams in a bubble suit to protect him from the outside world's nasty germs. Yep, it's a broad, physical comedy, starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Marley Shelton (PG-13)."Curse of the Jade Scorpion" -- Woody Allen's latest New York City feature takes place in the '40s, with Helen Hunt playing an efficiency expert hired to modernize the office of a crack insurance investigator (Allen). (PG-13).
"Ghosts of Mars" -- It's horrormeister John Carpenter's futuristic Western held on the angry red planet. Mars' vengeful warrior spirits come back to reclaim it from the human colonists and lawman (lawwoman?) Natasha Henstridge and outlaw Ice Cube join forces to do battle. (R).
"Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back" -- Director Kevin Smith bids adieu to his popular Jersey stoner duo with a film he describes as "nothing but a long line of gags." The two try to sabotage a studio movie inspired by a comic book based on their superhero alter-egos, "Bluntman and Chronic," starring Smith, Jason Mewes, Ben Affleck, Matt Damon, Joey Lauren Adams and an ensemble cast (R).
"Summer Catch" -- A rich girl whose family summers on Cape Cod has a romance with a local poor boy who hopes to become a major league baseball pitcher. Freddie Prinze Jr. and Jessica Biel star (PG-13).
