Kahuku survived a furious fourth-quarter comeback to defeat Skyline High School of Utah 19-14 last night in a preseason football game.

Kahuku took a 19-0 lead after three quarters. Skyline then rallied for two touchdowns to get back into the game before Kahuku cornerback Trumaine Oto intercepted a pass from Dustin Barker with 43 seconds remaining to seal the victory.

The defending state champion Red Raiders, currently on a 10-game winning streak, avenged a 24-21 loss to the Eagles last season.

Barker carried 16 times for only 22 yards
against the Kahuku defense.

"I give this game to the defense," said Kahuku coach Siuaki Livai. "They came back and saved us."

Kahuku dominated the first half to take a 14-0 lead. Muli Vaipula dashed 62 yards for a touchdown on the Red Raiders' first play from scrimmage.

The Red Raiders then used trickery to extend the lead. Defensive lineman Jonathan Mapu lined up at tight end and caught a 6-yard scoring pass from Inoke Funaki in the second quarter.

In the third period, Funaki completed a pass to James Cammerer, who then pitched the ball to Pula, who took it the rest of the way for a 56-yard touchdown.

The Red Raiders could have taken an even bigger lead if not for a goal-line stand by the Skyline defense to end the first half.

The Eagles' offense finally clicked in the fourth quarter. Barker sprinted 11 yards for Skyline's first score.

Two drives later, a fumble by Kahuku's Irvin Atuaia gave Skyline the ball at the Red Raider 32. Two plays later, Danny Copinga took a pitch from Barker and ran 5 yards for a touchdown.

Skyline's Nate Stevens then intercepted a Funaki pass with 2:41 remaining. But Oto's interception on fourth down ended Skyline's comeback hopes.

"We'll take this win, but we had many opportunities to put them away in the beginning," Livai said. "It was a great start to the season."
