Ex-Protestant minister to speak at 2 churches

Alex Jones, a former Protestant minister who converted to Catholicism along with members of a Detroit Pentecostal church that he led, will speak at two Honolulu churches this weekend.

Jones will speak at a 7 p.m. gathering today at the Pearl Harbor Naval Station chapel and at 7 p.m. tomorrow at St. Pius X Church, 2821 Lowrey Ave. Both events are sponsored by the St. Michael Center for the Blessed Virgin Mary, a Catholic lay organization, and open to the public.

Jones travels to speak about his religious journey, which started when his Bible study group at the Maranatha Christian Church in Detroit researched the worship practices of first-century Christians. It grew into a study of differences in churches.

In June 2000 the majority of the Maranatha congregation voted to move to Catholicism. Some 64 of the congregation were baptized in the Catholic church in April after seven months of religious instruction, according to a release from the sponsoring group.

Rachel Schneider stared at the stained-glass windows in
St. Andrew's Cathedral yesterday, the last day of Vacation
Bible School. "We talked about how people built tall and
beautiful churches with soaring spaces as a way to express
God's greatness," said teacher Jenny Wallace. The
youngsters visited a Hawaiian heiau, a Buddhist temple
and Mission Houses Museum during the weeklong school,
which explored how different people have different ways
of knowing God.

Tickets at $33 are available from Jean Gochros, 735-1989.
