Big Isle paniolo ride
in ‘Planet of the Apes’

ONE of the hottest movies in the country today was partially filmed on the Big Island, and several Hawaii residents were featured in it, but you'd never know. The film is the hot, hot "Planet of the Apes," and the digitally altered Ape Village in the film was Pu'u Huluhulu. In addition, several of the "apes" on horseback were Big Isle paniolo. If you check out the county of Hawaii Web site on the Internet, you can find other films partially filmed there starting with Paramount's "The Hidden Pearls" in 1918, and followed by many others including Richard Boone's "Kona Coast" in 1968, "The Way the World Ended" (1979), "Black Widow" (1985) and the disastrous Kevin Costner film "Waterworld" in 1994 ...

ILLUSIONIST David Copperfield took his parents and girlfriend, Ambre, to see the Society of Seven. Alas, it wasn't the group he remembered from his early days at the Pagoda's C'est Si Bon nightclub, but the "New Kids on the Rock," the Society of Seven Las Vegas. Still, he was scarcely disappointed ... Copperfield, who's performing now at the more spacious Blaisdell, will also be on "Emme and Friends" airing Aug. 25 on KGMB. The question is, does the performer remember asking hostess Emme Tomimbang, then a newcomer to news reporting, if she'd like to join him on the road as an "assistant." The flattered but realistic Tomimbang said, "No, thank you." ... Also on Emme's Aug. 25 show will be James MacArthur, "Dano" of "Hawaii Five-O" fame ... Over 200 original artworks by 76 Hawaii artists will be in a preview sale open to the public, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. tomorrow at the Honolulu Academy of Arts ...

Calling "Island Girls"

VERSATILE Michael Paulo is looking for a bevy of babes -- I know, who isn't? -- to sit in the audience at Kapono's in the Aloha Tower Marketplace Monday from 10 a.m. to noon. They'll be shooting a music video for Junior Maile's hit tune from his CD, "The Voice." It's called "Only My Island Girl," and they thought a crowd of island girls fawning over Junior as he sings would be appropriate. Kimo Kahoano is making a cameo appearance to introduce Junior to the stage. The girls who fill the audience will receive no pay -- just 15 seconds of fame or so -- and the producers hope a lot of fun ... I said the twin acrobats, Long Jun and Long Bing from the "Yes!" Encore show at the Polynesian Palace would appear on the David Letterman TV show on Sunday. I meant, of course, on Monday night ...

The Road to Wealth

KHET netted over $90,000 in its recent on-air fund drive, the largest amount being raised by the showing of "Suze Orman: The Road to Wealth," which brought in close to $27,000. That's pretty good, considering the record $46,000 raised by the blockbuster showing of "Les Miz," which I co-hosted with Don Robbs, was with a bank of phone-answering volunteers, and Orman did the bulk of the pledge work herself, with staff and volunteers taking the night off. Now that they know Suze Orman is so popular with her financial advice on managing debt, paying for college, investment options, retirement planning, etc., there'll be a full complement of volunteers helping her raise funds in a rebroadcast of her pledge program Sunday at 6 p.m.
