When a salary becomes
a federal case

It's probably safe to say that nobody from the "wrong side of the tracks" has their salary publicly disclosed in a U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission filing. Schuler Homes' CEO James Schuler clearly lives on the "right" side of those tracks.

A July 30 company proxy reported his executive compensation package at $1.36 million, up from just under $1.2 million last year -- an almost 17 percent increase.

That puts Schuler third among executives of Hawaii publicly traded companies, with a salary of $650,000 and bonus of $709,120 for the fiscal year ending March 31, according to the publicly traded company's federally mandated filing. Only two were paid more -- former Pacific Century CEO Lawrence Johnson was paid $3.68 million (due in part to a $2.9 million retirement payment), and BancWest Corp. Chairman and CEO Walter Dods.

Due to a company merger earlier this year the figures were not available for a May Star-Bulletin story on executive compensation.

From the "mommy track"

Schuler's daughter Pam Jones may well be the envy of many a working mother. Her leave of absence as executive vice president and chief investment officer of the homebuilding company her dad built, has given her a new title -- stay-at-home mom.

"As you probably know I've been working for the company since it was formed in 1988, took it through going public, and being the CFO of a company that size requires a lot of hours," Jones said.

Those hours are now devoted to her children, a 14-year old son and an 11-year old daughter. "This is a great opportunity to have quality time with the kids," she said.

While she remains active as a company director, she said, "I have a high degree of confidence in all the executive officers and division management in the company." One of those is her husband, Mike -- president of Schuler's Hawaii operations.
