Name game continues

Think big, Dobelle-- bring back the ’Bows

NAMES omitted to protect the innocent:

>> I thought your piece about changing the name of the Rainbows was superb. Apparently the name-changers felt that "Rainbows" isn't macho enough. ... Moreover, other big-time universities do well without macho names.

>> I agree with you totally and thank you for bringing it up. The Rainbow name and the color green are very dear to many of us kamaainas and University of Hawaii graduates. I cannot understand why highly educated people at UH choose to mess with tradition. It's so stupid to see our teams suit up in black, when it's not even our school color!

>> I like the new logo and I don't want to see the "yuk" rainbow again. I also like (Dobelle's) ideas of shooting for the top in all that the university does. It's about time we have someone at the top with the vision to see what is possible instead of what is not possible.

>> Right-on, Mr. Simpson. Let's get this team out of those ridiculous black leotards. Also that dumb "H" logo has got to go, along with the "Warriors." They have a tradition as "The 'Bows" -- a tradition ripped away from Rainbow fans without our permission. Let's get the white helmets back, with that classy "UH" rainbow logo. If you get a grassroots movement started, count me in.

>> I am in total agreement with your sentiments about bringing back the green and the "Rainbows." ... One question that I do have is whether or not the athletic administration asked the legions of UH supporters and alumni about the name change to Warriors. If it did and there was considerable support for the change, then fine (although I would not be too happy about it).

>> I strongly disagree with your prodding the new pres to change the name/logo back to the rainbow. I have been in Hawaii for 30 years and loved the rainbows and logo, but its time has past. The new logo is both contemporary and Hawaiian. I really like it!!!!

>> Great column. This is one of the first positive statements I have read. I hope you have touched a sensitive nerve. Why don't you conduct a campaign to get the nickname changed or at least incorporated in UH athletic department graphics? Besides, I believe the athletic department overstepped their bounds by changing the nickname to Warriors. Be that as it may, if you team up with a radio or TV station (Larry Price would go for it I am sure), why not really try to get the nickname changed? Your campaign should have a bold battle cry like:

RESTORE THE RAINBOW!

What do you think? UH Rainbow Warriors (for football) worked very well. Let us all work together to RESTORE THE RAINBOW!

I support your effort 100 percent.

>> C'mon, gotta admit that the logo is pretty cool, ... and MUCH more marketable than the old logo. It's not about "selling your soul." It's purely about keeping up with the times. And in this day and age, you have to. Bradduh, this is just my opinion. ... And just wanted to share with you my thoughts. If this is Kalani from Ka'u, right on bro! Keep representing well for us country folks.
