You can't drive a block without running over roadway workers these days. All this activity seems unprecedented. It's a Maximum Effort, as the Air Corps said during World War II. Everyone who can be on the lines seems to be there. Road-workers and
the Big SleepThey're widening streets, laying new sidewalks, smoothing out curbs, plugging in new streetlights, simplifying signage, grinding down the asphalt, plopping in new sewer pipes and underground utilities, and so on. Punchbowl Street, one of the major arteries into Honolulu, will be largely closed later this August.
We'll have a much more pleasant city when the work starts to be completed. That's something to look forward to. And it's good to see all those city and county and state employees out there beavering away so we can drive more smoothly and safely.
But I wonder.
Where were all these employees in years past when little road work was being done? They're playing catch-up now.
When school starts up again, will they go into hibernation?
