The 24th Annual Pete Newell Big Man Camp is short on big names this year, mainly because of international tournaments and injuries.

Seven-foot-six Shawn Bradley was a last-minute addition to the list of National Basketball Association campers, joining other players such as teammate Donnell Harvey, Antawn Jamison of Golden State, Malik Rose of San Antonio and Chris Mihm of Cleveland.

The Big Man Camp runs from Aug. 13-17 at Kekuhaupi'o Gym on Kamehameha Schools' campus. Sessions with the professional players run from 8:30-11:30 a.m. each day and the college players are scheduled to be on the court from 1-4 p.m.

The University of Hawaii's Haim Shimonovich (6-foot-10) and Chaminade's Willie Davis (6-8) are the local college players participating this year.

Shimonovich will be a sophomore in the fall and Davis will be a junior.

Other college players at the camp include Andy Slocum from Texas A&M, John Flippen from Baylor and Josh Moore from Michigan.

Several players attending the camp were taken in the first round of the NBA draft this spring, including Troy Murphy, an All-American at Notre Dame who was selected by the Golden State Warriors, and Jason Collins, whom the Houston Rockets made the sixth Stanford player ever taken in the first round before trading him to the New Jersey Nets.

Other incoming NBA players include Ruben Boumtje Boumtje and Zach Randolph of the Portland TrailBlazers.

Players from Japan and Korea will also participate in the camp this year, including Seo Jang Hoon, who plays professionally in South Korea.

This year's coaching staff includes Merv Lopes, who coached at Chaminade University for 12 years, and Kiki Vandeweghe, who was named the Denver Nuggets general manager yesterday. Other coaches are Rick Carlisle, Marc Iavaroni, Stu Lantz, Pete Gaudet, Dave Yanai, Jasen Powell, Tim Grgurich, Eric Reveno and Mark Grabow.

Pete Newell started the Big Man Camp 24 years ago on the mainland, with four players participating -- including Vandeweghe. He brought the camp to Hawaii in 1993.
