Felechner goes national

Maui's Shaun Felechner is one of eight golfers nationally to qualify for the Junior Ryder Cup matches to be held Sept. 25-26 at the Kildare Hotel & Golf Club in Ireland.

There will be six boys and six girls in the 13-15-year-old division. Felechner, 15, qualified during the season-long PGA Junior Series point standings. The Ryder Cup matches are the first formal connection between the PGA of America and Ryder Cup.

There will be two days of competition, featuring three boys' and three girls' four-ball matches, followed by a day of six mixed four-ball matches. A total of 12 points will be at stake over the two-day competition.

Maui claims West title, heads to World Series

Shawn Patao, who homered in the first and led off with a double in the fourth, helped Maui rock La Mirada's pitching for 10 hits.

Winning pitcher Kalehua Moniz faced only 23 batters, allowing one hit and two walks, and striking out seven in his second complete game in the tournament.

Hawaii's own

Benny Agbayani, Mets: The Hawaii Pacific University and St. Louis School alumnus sat out his 36th game of the season in New York's 4-3 win over the Brewers, but it had nothing to do with trade rumors or his performance. Mets' manager Bobby Valentine held the majority of his starters -- including Agbayani and catcher Mike Piazza -- out of the day game following a night game because the temperature on the field reached 102 degrees.

Mike Fetters, Pirates: The Iolani School graduate earned his third save of the season yesterday, pitching a scoreless ninth in Pittsburgh's 8-5 win over the Dodgers, his former team.

Fetters got Gary Sheffield and Shawn Green before allowing a walk to Adrian Beltre. Beltre took second on catcher's indifference, then Fetters forced Paul Loduca to ground out to end the game.

The save was Fetters' second for the Pirates and signified that he has won the closer job outright.

"I'll take the ball when he (manager Lloyd McClendon) gives it to me...," Fetters told team Web site reporter Ed Eagle on Wednesday, "I've done it before and I think I did a pretty decent job when I did close. I'm getting older and I know I'm not as good as I used to be, but I still think I can get the job done."

Brandon Villafuerte, Rangers: The Big Island native did not pitch in Texas' 7-3 win over the Tigers after getting roughed up Wednesday.
