Hawaii sends 7 to
national meet Saturday

Star-Bulletin staff

Seven Hawaii youngsters have earned a chance to compete in the national Hershey Track and Field Meet in Hershey, Penn., Saturday.

Kathleen Cadiente of Lihue will be the youngest of the contingent, competing in the standing long jump for girls age 9-10.

Her brother, Kevin Cadiente, will make the trip to vie for the title in the 13-14 200 meters.

Also competing will be Kylee Ah Choy of Mililani (11-12 girls softball throw), Derek Fainberg of Honolulu (11-12 boys softball throw), Kristina Noga of Waipahu (13-14 girls softball throw), Bronson Tanaka (11-12 boys 400 meters) and Erin Wooldridge of Makawao (13-14 girls 200 meters.)

The group left yesterday and will return Sunday after spending a day at the Hershey Amusement Park and touring the chocolate factory.

Babe Ruth Hawaii headed to World Series

Kaimi Mead led Babe Ruth Hawaii to a 3-0 win in its regional tournament championship at El Segundo, Calif., yesterday.

The team of 14- and 15-year-olds goes on to play in the Babe Ruth World Series Aug. 17-25 in Hamilton, N.J.

Mead pitched 19 scoreless innings in the tournament and brought Hawaii back from a 12-2 loss earlier in the day with a four hitter and 10 strikeouts in the championship game.

Justin Ariki, Chris Balatico and catcher Robert Kurisu drove in runs in support of Mead.

Mead was named tournament most valuable player. Teammates Mel Silva, Kurisu and Balatico joined him on the all-tournament team.

Kyono leads tourney going into final day

Rachel Kyono leads Michelle Wie by a stroke heading into the final day of the HSWGA stroke play championship at Mid-Pacific Country Club.

Kyono shot a 72 yesterday to surpass Wie, who shot a 75, and take the lead 147-148.

Anna Umemura matched Kyono's second round 72 to propel herself into third place with a two-day score of 150.

Hayashi, Stubblefield reign at AT&T stroke play

Kevin Hayashi came from two shots back on the final day to overtake Kevin Carll and win the Aloha Section PGA AT&T Stroke Play Championship at Mauna Kea golf course.

Hayashi followed up his earlier rounds of 71 and 73 with a 72 for a total of 216. Larry Stubblefield captured the senior division by five strokes with a 219.

Hawaii's Own

Benny Agbayani, Mets: The St. Louis School and Hawaii Pacific University alumnus was back in the leadoff spot for the Mets in a 5-4 win over the Milwaukee Brewers, but he has lost the momentum he had before he was benched.

Agbayani stroked a two-out single in the second off Allen Levrault and earned a walk off Chad Fox in the eighth but was stranded both times. Agbayani is 1-for-8 since his return to the lineup, which is uncommon since he is batting .290 in the next two days after missing action this year. But in his third day back, he is only 4-for-20.

Mike Fetters, Pirates: The Iolani School product did not pitch against his former team in Pittsburgh's 9-4 loss to the Dodgers. Today is his last shot at revenge against the team that traded him.

Brandon Villafuerte, Rangers: The Big Island native made history in his team's 19-6 loss to Detroit last night, but it was not the kind of history a pitcher trying to stick in the big leagues would want any part of.

Villafuerte came on in relief of Mike Venafro in the ninth inning and gave up seven of his former club's 13 runs in the final frame. That enabled the Tigers to equal the record for most runs in the ninth inning since 1900, tying a mark set by the California Angels on Sept. 14, 1978. Villafuerte retired only one of the eight batters he faced before being mercifully taken out of the game.
