Creative kids find
ways to amaze adults

ONE of the most popular features on television for many years was Art Linkletter's "Kids Say the Darndest Things." He even got a couple of books out of the concept. But how about, "Kids DO the darndest things." Just ask soccer maven Jack Sullivan about that one. He's been regaling pals with the story of his 4-year-old grandson, Brendan. Young Brendan was painting with his little pal Megan in the family room and Megan didn't want to share the easel, so Brendan began giving her a hard time. As kids of that age do, she ran to tell Mom, easel in hand. Never mind. When they returned, Brendan had already found something else on which to paint -- her dog! ...

VOLUNTEERING to line up staffers and celebs to sell copies of the Star-Bulletin at various Starbucks locales islandwide was Teresa Kendall. Sales of the papers sold there went to help raise funds for the Kalihi Kai Elementary School, in need of playground equipment. One of the first people she enlisted, and how could he possibly say no, was her husband, Star-Bulletin president Don Kendall. With him stepping up, how could any of us say no, not that we would ... Caitlin Metcalf, who'll be a junior at Punahou in the fall, represented Hawaii in the Miss Teen North America contest in Orlando, Fla., and was the youngest woman to finish in the Top 10. In addition, her fellow contestants named her Miss Congeniality. There's so much cat fighting in some contests, it's difficult to find someone to be Miss Congeniality, so this was a feather in Caitlin's cap ...

THERE'S a mom and pop coffee house in the Aikahi Shopping Center called "Muddy Waters," and while the name doesn't stimulate my taste buds, Dr. Mark Stitham likes it. Owned by the appropriately named Clay Loo and wife Julie, the place appeals to the psychiatrist/actor on a number of fronts. He likes the coffee and blues music, live on some nights, and the incentive that the coffee is free if you get the rock 'n' roll question of the day. The intensively competitive Dr. Stitham, who once won $11,000 on "Jeopardy," says he usually gets four out of five right, having been a DJ called "Doc Rock" for 10 years. Answer to headline: ? and the Mysterians ...

IT wasn't exactly the "Planet of the Apes," but Karla Brom of Rainbow Connection is back from Quepos, Costa Rica, where she saw more monkeys than people. Now that she and her boyfriend, John Proud, are back, they'll have to settle for spiders rather than spider monkeys ...

Power dinner

YOU want power music? We've got Tower of Power music. The group will be playing at the Four Seasons Maui at the 12th annual "Terry Fox Cancer Research Benefit" on Oct. 13. Fifteen celebrity chefs will be preparing specialties at the event, named for the Canadian who lost his leg to cancer and ran across Canada in 1981 to raise awareness and funds for research. Last year the Four Seasons Maui, with its 10K run, raised $185,000 for cancer research. Incidentally, hotel staffers are standing tall these days, as readers of Travel & Leisure magazine voted the Wailea resort the No. 1 hotel in Hawaii and No. 5 in the world ...
